Claude Levi-Stauss (1908-)

French social anthropologist and leading exponent of Structuralism

History

After studying philosophy and law at the University of Paris (1927-32), Levi-Strausse taught in secondary school and was associated with Jean-Paul Sartre's intellectual circle. He later taught at universities in Brazil, the US and France.
