The Revitalization
of the South-West City

The rapid expansion of cities,
particularly since the Second
World War, has disrupted their
natural growth, giving rise,
in the massive housing
estates, to virtual ghettos
which cannot be linked up with
the overall urban whole. The
city has dealt with this
problem by ignoring it and
leaving these housing estates
to their fate as slums. The
Jihoz‡padn’ mžsto (south-west
city) is one of the largest
and most problematic dwelling
areas in the Czech Republic.
The panel technology which
held sway in this country
broke down many of the ties
that gave shape to the
country's face and historical
consciousness.

I would like to see the
south-west city become a real
city with its center and its
various functions, governed by
such regulations as are
necessary to ensure its smooth
functioning and a high quality
of life for those living
there.

The fact that the area is
under an arrival flight path
gave me the idea of making
this square into a massive
mosaic. I would like the
mosaic to symbolise a new
approach to resolving the
construction problems not only
of the square itself, but also
of the areas surrounding the
south-west city.
