Snowy Egret - April 13, 2011

Snowy Egret at Wingfield Pines, Allegheny County, PA
Allegheny's first-ever Snowy Egret spent a day on Chartiers Creek in the Wingfield Pines area 4/13, long enough to be seen by many eager Pittsburgh-area birders. It arrived on the heels of an exceptional storm system on April 12 which saw a switch from strong 20+ MPH south or southwest winds to even stronger 25+ MPH east or northeast winds in a matter of a few hours. This same storm dropped an almost incomprehensible Brown Pelican on Boone Reservoir in Washington County, just 5 miles or so from Wingfield Pines. The egret spent the day in a very odd place, along the creekside deep in a wooded area; not the expected habitat in which to finally see one of these things in Allegheny County by any stretch. It was not seen 4/14 or thereafter.
