American White Pelican - October 23, 2011

American White Pelican at Pymatuning Reservoir, Crawford County, PA
This bird was found in on the northern end of Pymatuning Reservoir on 17 October, and was seen through at least 28 October generally in the vicinity of the spillway and Ford Island. Many observers saw the bird during its stay but were frequently frustrated with extremely long-range views. I was lucky enough to be present on the afternoon of the 23rd when it made two close passes to the nature trail on Ford Island as it moved along the lake with a line of foraging Double-crested Cormorants.

Even though on a normal day there is usually nothing at the spillway itself other than Ring-billed Gulls, Mallards, and Canada Geese, it's still one of my favorite places in western Pennsylvania for photography, if for no other reason than it makes for great practice at photographing birds in flight. Below is my favorite image from this particular day.
