Summer Tanager - December 4, 2010

Summer Tanager at Saegertown, Crawford County, PA
For the second time in three years, a Summer Tanager appeared in late fall at a feeder in Crawford County, this year just outside Saegertown. After first seeing the tanager on 17 November, the hosting homeowner graciously opened his yard to birders. I made my journey on 4 December when these photos were made. He reported to me that the bird was last seen on 8 December following two days of intense cold and snow. The bird appeared quite healthy during its entire stay so it is likely that it was finally motivated enough by the snow to resume its migration.
