Throughout January, White-winged Crossbills have been seen regularly in the larch plantation at the Imperial Strip Mines
in western Allegheny County. Flocks reported have ranged anywhere from about a dozen to 75 birds. On 11 January
I was able to make some distant photos of a few of them. I certainly hope to do better in the weeks to come, but at least
there is some photo documentation of these birds. There is very little, if any, other photographic documentation of this species
for Allegheny County, though I assume more will be forthcoming this year, which will certainly prove to be the best
on record for this county.
