American Avocet and Whimbrel - September 7, 2012

American Avocet and Whimbrel at Somerset Lake, Somerset County, PA
Somerset Lake has been the place for some amazing birds this year, including no less than a Ruff back in May. The latest additions to this list are American Avocet and Whimbrel, both of which represent second records for Somerset. The avocet, presumably one of three that were present two days before, was remarkably cooperative. Below are three pictures of the bird each taken in a different kind of light: the first in direct sunlight, the second in bright sky but shaded sunlight, and the third in true shadow as sunset approached. They're all pretty cool.

Canon 1DMkIV, 500mm f/4L + 1.4x TC III, 1/800 sec. at f/10 (manual), ISO 1000, handheld

The Whimbrel was on the fourth day of its stay when I caught up with it, and had already built a reputation for being very cooperative with observers. I wasn't as lucky as some, but still had some nice views as the sun dropped below the dam.
