Cattle Egret - November 16, 2010

Cattle Egret at Marshall Township, Allegheny County, PA

This Cattle Egret, part of a notable influx of the species into the upper Ohio Valley this fall, appeared in the extreme northwestern corner of Allegheny County 5 November, where it remained until at least 18 November. It spent nearly all of its time with a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle. It's only the second confirmed record for the county; the first was one found ill in Indiana Township in May 1967; it died the next day. There is also a compelling second hand report of another at Barati's Farm in the spring of 2004.
