Harlequin Duck - February 21, 2010

Harlequin Duck at Presque Isle State Park, Erie County, PA
I've seen a few Harlequin Ducks in Pennsylvania over the years. Five to be exact. But I had never seen an adult male, so when one was reported off the South Pier in Erie, I decided to try for six. Isn't it great when you chase a rare bird and are greeted not only by the bird, but a morning of exquisite light and plenty of interesting things to look at?

You can see him in there, right? Do you see the White-winged Scoter too?
Scope views of the bird from the South Pier were truly outstanding, but I was kicking myself for forgetting a camera I could digiscope with, because the bird was just a little too far for an SLR camera, even with 700mm of focal length. Still, at one point the bird came inside the channel (though always on the north side) and allowed some reasonable photos.
