Scott Kinzey discovered this juvenile Franklin's Gull at the spillway at Pymatuning State Park on the morning of 31 August.
Knowing that sunny afternoons are outstanding for photography at the spillway, I could not resist a "short" (read: fast) jaunt
up to Crawford County after work. As you can see, the bird did not disappoint. It really is an outstanding little gull (lower
case), very confiding and willing to approach the throngs of bread-tossing tourists at the spillway. It's not afraid of cameras
either. Here's hoping it stays for a few more days at least; if it does, it will provide dozens of birders a chance at what
will likely be their closest Pennsylvania encounter with this species for a very long time.
