Anna's Hummingbird at Shartlesville, Berks County, PA
For the second fall season in a row, Pennsylvania added a new hummingbird to its list. In 2009, it was the state's first
Allen's Hummingbird at Leola, Lancaster County. This year it was an Anna's Hummingbird, an adult female in Shartlesville,
Berks County. First seen three or four weeks before this photo was made (therefore in late October), the bird was banded 21
November. The next day, well over 25 birders appeared by noon, but unfortunately the bird, though present, proved hard to
pin down. It only used the feeder once, at 7:33 AM, and was seen briefly only four more times in the day, three times up to
about 10:30, then once at 3:51 PM. Though the photo below is nice enough, hopefully the bird will become a bit more predictable
at the feeder again and some much better images can be made.
