Rufous Hummingbird near Hopewell, Beaver County, PA
This bird was discovered frequenting a feeder at a home in southern Beaver County in mid-October. Having heard
the advice of Scott Shalaway on his nature-oriented radio show, the homeowners decided to contact the staff at Powdermill Nature Reserve to have the bird banded. On Sunday, November 27, the bird was captured, banded, and identified as an adult female Rufous
Hummingbird.
The kind folks at Powdermill let the birding community know that the homeowners would welcome birders to come and
see their hummingbird, which is exactly what I did on November 30. I was eager to obtain my own photos of what is most
likely the first Beaver County record of this species. Lighting was heavy overcast and difficult, but the bird was accommodating,
and I managed to get the following two images.
