Willet at Dashield's Dam, Allegheny County, PA
These five Willets were discovered late in the afternoon on the southern bank of the Ohio River, and were present for
over an hour as eight avid Allegheny County birders rushed to the scene, including yours truly. They provided a facinating
study, allowing close approach to within 75 feet. They were completely unconcerned with feeding; they simply faced north
the entire time they were present, calling to each other and itching to take to the wing and continue on their journey.
Eventually, in almost total darkness, they did, and disappeared into the night.
This is the first documented record of Willet in Allegheny County.
