A plein air painter of New York City, Patricia Melvin has been painting landscapes for the past twenty-five years. Primarily self-taught, she studied with Gabriel Laderman and Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Students' League, and with Martin Pajeck, student of Max Beckmann. She also studied in Paris and Amsterdam, where she did her first plein air painting.
She has painted and exhibited in the United States and Europe, and now lives in the Lower East Side, where, she says, "I feel the history of the city and the continuity of life; the old buildings seem to live and breathe. Because of their low height, I can see a lot of the sky. This gives me joy and enables me to capture the beauty and drama of nature even in the city."
Ms. Melvin’s paintings capture not only the visual aspects of these city scenes as a photograph would do, but also the life and feel of the many different communities of New York.
Melvin has had solo exhibitions in New York City, San Francisco, Bridgehampton, and Amsterdam, and has participated in group exhibitions at the Williamsburg Art & Historic Center, Brooklyn; Kertesz Fine Art, San Francisco; The Schoolhouse Gallery, Croton Falls; and G.W. Einstein, Broome St. Gallery, Bowery Gallery and the Noble Maritime Collection in New York City. Her paintings are on display at the Berkshire Art Gallery, 80 Railroad St., Great Barrington, MA.
