Far from the Farm: The Civil War Letters of Lester M. Beers |
The Beers farmhouse |
The letter below is addressed to Ambrose Beers, Lester's father, by "F. Babbitt." I am in the process of determining who was F. Babbitt, and his relationship to the Beerses. See About Lester Beers for editor's notes.

My dear Mr Beers:
I have received a letter from Henry Bird stating that Lester is very sick in the hospital at Newbern North Carolina, and another letter from a young man in Tarrytown stating that brother who is in the same company wired/wrote [?] him to inform me that Lester has the fever, and at present is not rational, but the Doctor still had hoped " - " has been sick two weeks"
I immediately wrote to his major requesting his discharge or furlough, and stating that Lester never had good health and should not have enlisted, and that any statement which he might make could be thoroughly relied upon. To enforce this, I referred him to some of the first men of the country, and to my own position.
My kindest regard to you all.
Yours truly,
F. Babbitt
As soon as I hear anything further, I will write again.
