Community in the Virtual Metropolis

Version 1.2  (under construction)
a field guide to the intersection of urban
information networks, and geographic space

Introduction:
the Virtual Metropolis

The increasing attention given to the rise of cyberspace, and the event of virtual communities, raises some provocative questions about what constitutes "place." Does a community exist outside of a "there"? Further, does the aggregate of virtual community equal the virtual metropolis?

Is it possible to have a "there" where there is no "there"? If a place is defined by relationships rather than place, then what is the nature of relationship? Do these relationships constitute community, and by extension what is the nature of community.

This Web site focuses on the Virtual Metropolis and examines the interrelationship of the virtual and proximate worlds.
