The Democratic Women’s 2008 Scholarship

The Davidson County Democratic Women (DCDW) awarded their sixth annual scholarships at the DCDW Picnic on Thursday, July 24th at the Ellington Agricultural Center. Caitlin Kelly from Nashville School of the Arts who wrote the Grand Prize winning essay received $1000. The second place winner was Tamara Carroll from Maplewood High School. The third prize winner was Abigail Randall from Hume Fogg High School. The young women wrote winning essays describing ways to ensure fair elections. Family and friends joined the scholarship winners along with Davidson County Democratic Women and candidates for local office who enjoyed barbecue and the annual auction. Caitlin Kelly will attend Hampshire College this fall. Tamara Carroll will attend UT Chattanooga and Abigail Randall will attend University of Tennessee.
DCDW is pleased to announce that in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Shannon Wood and Peter Kurland have endowed the Davidson County Democratic Women/Shannon Wood Scholarship. Starting now, all donations received will be tax deductible and will be added to the endowment, allowing the scholarship to continue in perpetuity.
Shannon Wood helped start The Davidson County Democratic Women’s Scholarship in 2001 to encourage young women to be politically active. The essay question is structured to inspire young women to express their own political ideas. Shannon has run for office, campaigned for others and participated in grassroots efforts to achieve peace, universal health care and fair elections. Shannon would not have been able to attend Antioch College without financial assistance and is committed to passing on that support to others. Scholarship winners will continue to be recognized at the annual DCDW picnic. In addition to receiving the scholarship, winners will have the opportunity to work as an intern for a week during the summer at the Tennessee Democratic Party Headquarters in Nashville.
This scholarship is established to benefit college bound, female, high school seniors in Davidson County. Recipients will be chosen based upon their essays answering the question “What policy or law in the United States would you change and why?” Essays will be evaluated on creative and critical thinking, practical application, style and writing mechanics. Consideration will be given to financial need.
