The purpose of The Davidson County Democratic Women’s Scholarship Fund is to award college scholarships to college bound Davidson County female high school seniors to be used to attend college.
Prize: $1000 grand prize scholarship

Politics plays a major role in shaping our everyday lives.

What political decision or event has had the greatest impact on your life? How? Why?


Requirements:
1. The applicant must be a Davidson County resident.
2. The applicant must be a college bound, female high school senior.
3. The applicant must be a student in good standing.
4. All essays become the property of Davidson County Democratic Women’s Scholarship Fund and may be posted on the DCDW website at www.DCDW.org

Application:
1. Fill out the application form. See other side.
2. Write a 300-500 word essay based on the essay theme above.
3. Provide names and phone numbers of 2 references: one from a teacher, one from a non-family member.

Awards:
1. The scholarship will be awarded at the annual DCDW picnic in July of 2006.
2. All participants and their family and friends are invited to attend.
3. The winner(s) will be recognized at the picnic.
4. Families of the judges and scholarship committee are not eligible for awards. All decisions of judges are final.
5. Essays will be evaluated on creative and critical thinking, practical application, style, and writing mechanics.

The Democratic Women's Scholarship 2003 Winners

The Davidson County Democratic Women are proud to announce that Sheena Jenkins and Afton Watson are the winners of the First Annual DCDW Scholarships awarded by Mary Clement at the DCDW Picnic on July 24th at the Ellington Agricultural Center. The Grand Prize winner, Sheena Jenkins from Antioch High School, received $1000 and the second place winner, Afton Watson from Community High School, received $200. Sheena and Afton wrote winning essays describing ways to encourage young women in Tennessee to participate in the political process.

Sheena Jenkins qualified for the National Honor Roll and is a volunteer with the Red Cross, the March of Dimes and the Homework Hotline. Sheena will attend Alabama A & M College. Afton Watson was the valedictorian at Community High School and will attend Salt Lake Community college in the fall.

The Annual DCDW Picnic was one of the best attended to date with dozens of elected officials and candidates and hundreds of guests enjoying barbecue and a lively auction. The purpose of The Davidson County Democratic Women's organization is to encourage and stimulate women to participate in Democratic Party activities, to encourage women to run for public office, to inform and educate women about civic and political matters, and to support the goals and nominees of the Democratic Party.
