1840: Richard Lewis born to David & Hannah (Jenkins) Lewis in Resolven, Glamorgan Co., Wales
~1852-1862: The Lewis family lived in Trevorton, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania
1862-1865: served in the Civil War, first in a heavy artillery unit, then in the Signal Corps (no map point).
1866-1868: attended Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He earned a bachelors degree in mining engineering.
1869: may have attended the driving of the golden spike marking the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promentory Summit, Utah.
1870: living in Manheim, Lancaster Co., PA while working as an engineer for the railroad. Future wife Sarah Betts is also livingin Manheim, with the Henry Diffenderfer family.
1880: living in a boarding house in Huston Twp., Clearfield Co., Pennsylvania with wife Sarah (Betts) Lewis. Richard was a coal mine superintendant.
1883-1885: three Lewis children born in Pardoe, Mercer Co., Pennsylvania.
~1888: the Lewis family moved to a ranch in Slidell, Louisiana.
~1891: "...they just packed up their clothes, left all the furniture, and took the train to Washington, where he worked as head of the mines in Carbonado."
1901: retired to Tacoma, where he died in 1903. His widow Sarah lived in the same house until her death in 1927.
