Nellie (Bertha Nell) Rugh
Nellie was born in Elm Grove near Azen in Scotland County Missouri on November 7, 1884. She was raised on her father's farm there.
On February 12, 1905 at her parents home Nellie married Chase Clark NELSON . The ceremony was performed by the Reverend J.W. Calloway. Chase was born in Bison, Rush County, Kansas on February 16, 1883. He was the son of Peter NELSON and Mary Alice ALKIRE.
Following marriage Nellie & Chase farmed in Scotland County for several years then, with infant son Harley, moved to Oregon to join Nell's two brothers, Cecil and Harry.
They lived in Oregon and in Washington State for about four years. Chase found employment during this time as a farm hand and barber. A daughter, Laverta, was born while in Oregon.
In 1913 the family moved back to Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, staying for a short time with Nell's parents (Henry & Caroline).
They next moved to the nearby town of Gorin where Chase again worked as a barber.
Sometime later they moved back onto a farm near "Elm Grove". They continued to work several farms in that general area until finally moving to California in 1928. Chase then did agricultural work in the orange groves of Southern California as well as gardening. He later became a Carpenter by trade. They lived in their own home on East End Avenue in the City of Pomona for many years.
Chase died on May 8, 1958 in Pomona and was buried in the Pomona Cemetery.
Nellie died on June 14, 1978 in Pomona and was buried alongside Chase in the same cemetery.
