St. Mary's by the Sea

Welcome graphic

[Note: This is what is usually referred to as an "unofficial" website. The creator and site-minder has no official connection with the parish. He is, in fact, merely a lover of the old liturgy which the former Parish Priest, the late and sorely missed Fr. Daniel Johnson, so carefully nurtured during his tenure at St. Mary's.

If you wish to contact the parish or the parish priests, you may do so by telephone at 714-536-6913 or by mail at ST. MARY'S BY THE SEA CATHOLIC CHURCH, 321 TENTH STREET, HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA 92648. If St Mary's has an e-mail address, I'm afraid I don't know what it is. If you e-mail me you will only get, well, me and I have no official connection with the parish. I am 20 miles away from St. Mary's these days.]

For some 15 years, St. Mary's by the Sea has been the spiritual heart of Orange County and southern Los Angeles County for those attached to the traditional Roman Rite Mass. Every Sunday at noon, this liturgy was celebrated with great reverence and love by Fr. Daniel Johnson, the pastor of St. Mary's.

Sunday 9 May 2004 was the 50th anniversary of the ordination to the Holy Priesthood of Fr. Johnson. It was also the day of his retirement. As of 10 May 2004 a new administration took over and for the next three years St Mary's was without the traditional Roman Rite of Mass.

As of the First Sunday of Advent on 2 December 2007 this situation changed. After the issuance of Pope Benedict XVI's Motu Proprio, Summorum Pontificum, the parish priest with the co-operation of the diocese of Orange has kindly and generously decided to re-instate the celebration of the 12 Noon Mass at St Mary's in the ancient Roman Rite. St Mary's own official web page containing the announcement can be found here.

This website will remain open, at least for the time being, as a memorial to Fr Johnson's work and as an encouragement to the new pastor and diocesan administration to allow tradition to flourish.

Those who wish to follow - and, we pray, join - the efforts to preserve and encourage our ancient heritage are invited to visit the website for Una Voce- Orange County.

At this time the following site remains active showing the location and contact information for St. Mary's, including times for Masses and Confessions: St. Mary's by the Sea Catholic Church.
