Hi, Janet Barber here.
Kate (Senior Sheltie at our place) gets most of the credit for my Photography career. We were the second group to compete on the Family Channel show "That's My Dog" several years ago. Kate won and the prizes were a years supply of dog food and a beautiful camera. Kate took the dog food and gave me the camera. So now I had to learn how to operate it.
A photographer who worked in a local lab took me under his wing and gave me lessons each week on what and how to shoot. Then we would go over the shots, most of them bad, and discuss how to improve them. With time and work and a lot of film, things began to improve.
One of my professions is horse training. Another is judging Horse Shows both Nationally and Internationally. I think because of this my eye is trained to find both correct conformation and the faults of the animal in front of me. So when I shoot, I look to find the most flattering angle for each subject. I also feel it is important to try to capture the soul or essence of each animal. I want your dog to look like your dog! As I got more into showing our Jandale Shelties, I practiced photographing them at home in different poses and then did candids ringside.
Photography is a most rewarding endeavor. I feel good when I think I've gotten the shot, even better when I see the proof and the BEST when the owners are pleased with the work.
I am honored to have shot some incredibly nice animals. It's so much easier to get the great shot when the subject is outstanding. And so many of the animals I have photographed and that you will see on this web site are of this quality.
Thanks to their owners for allowing me to share in their beauty and immortalize them on film. It's been great fun! I look forward to continuing the adventure.
