General rules for working in the shop

  1. Safety glasses must be worn in the shop.
  2. Students must pass safety test before using machines.
  3. No talking while using machines.
  4. Don't crowd anyone using a machine.
  5. No loose or baggy clothing while using machines
  6. No loose jewelry may be worn while using machines.
  7. Long hair must be tied back.

Grading

7th grade

This class is an introduction to woodworking. Students learn by building beginning level projects. They will learn to:
  1. use tools properly and safely.
  2. read a material list for a project.
  3. measure and cut wod acurately.
  4. Use the jig saw, drill press and a variety of sanding tools.
  5. select the correct tool for a specific task.
  6. properly finish a project by applying stain and polyurethane.

8th grade

This builds on the skills students learned in 7th Grade woodworking. They will also learn to:
  1. develop a material list for a selected project.

Wood I

Wood I 600/608 This is a beginning level woodworking class. Emphasis is on learning to use woodworking machines properly and safely. Students will build projects both from prepared plans and from their own designs. They will learn:
  1. Common wood joints
  2. To read plans
  3. To apply various finishes
  4. To create a material list
  5. Measurement techniques
  6. To use a Lathe

Wood II

Wood II 601/609 Prerequisite: Wood I This is an intermediate level woodworking class. The course is designed for students who want to build on the skills learned in Wood I. They will learn:
  1. Intermediate level wood joints
  2. To design projects
  3. To make cabinets with drawers
  4. To make cabinets with doors
  5. To design lathe projects
  6. To use the internet as a woodworking resource

Wood III/IV

Wood III/IV 602/610 Prerequisite: Wood II or instructor's permission This is an advanced level woodworking class. This course is for students who have completed Wood I and Wood II and have an interest in expanding their woodworking skills to a higher level. They will learn:
  1. To cut complex wood joints
  2. To design cabinets for special purposes
  3. To make advanced level lathe projects
  4. Advanced measurement techniques
  5. To sharpen tools
  6. Advanced finishing techniques

Class Rules:

  1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
  2. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking.
  3. Use appropriate language.
  4. Be on time to class.
  5. Bring a pencil to class.
  6. Write your name on all project parts
  7. Put all tools and supplies away.

Grading

Items that determine a student's grade vary according to course level. The primary factor is the amount of effort the individual puts into his or her work.

The following items are expected of all students.

  1. Has project plans prepared.
  2. Refers to plans when necessary
  3. Initiative (self starting)
  4. Safety awareness - works with a safe attitude
  5. Self challenging - takes on challenging projects
  6. Asks for help when necessary
  7. Helpful to others
  8. Accepts constructive criticism
  9. Helpful with cleanup
