What are all these scribblings, anyway?

Travel Whimsies

These began life as writing exercises suggested by San Francisco Chronicle colunmnist Adair Lara in one of her workshops. They're here mostly to remind me that writing can be creative and fun, and to give me easy access to the current draft when the revision inspiration strikes. Expect them to undergo expansion and revision on a semi-regular basis.

Memoir-ish Pieces

I'm not sure if these are personal essays, or memoir-like things, or something else. I do know that they come out of real memories and personal truths.

The Twisted Truths Arc: A Little Background

Yeah, I admit it: I was an X-Phile. At least up until Season 8, that is. I had a lot of fun playing with Chris Carter's characters and building some fiction.

This story arc came about as a result of a post-Gethsemane dream. My subconscious latched very firmly on to the passing mention in TV Guide of a possible season 5 romance for "one of the leads." My subconscious promptly replied "Oh right. That's really logical. Mulder and Scully are emotionally, professionally, and just about physically isolated from the rest of the world. They certainly possess the inherent emotional trust to strike up relationships with someone other than each other; witness Never Again. And Fox Mulder, trusting soul and trained FBI agent that he is, has never encountered the concept that harvesting pillow talk is one of the world's oldest espionage techniques. Yup, Mulder and Scully are both ripe candidates to ease the emotional and physical aridity of their lives with someone else."

And then I realized that CC and company were probably bright enough to figure that one out, too, and that they would therefore have to set about driving a wedge between the two characters. And lo and behold, we get Never Again, Elegy, Demons, and Gethsemane. Looks like a wedge to me, and dollars to doughnuts we have Mulder trying to schedule a love life in between monsters, mutants, and alien conspiracies next season. So my subconscious said "Well, hell, if we have to watch this, let's go 'em one better and really drive a wedge in there. Here, chew on this. . ." and the old SC promptly served up a dream that faded out with the title line of Echoes of the Angels.

Story Overview

Twisted Truths will follow Scully's efforts to counteract the real powers behind Mulder's takedown, and Mulder's life underground.

The arc begins in Echoes of the Angels, with a bitter reunion between the partners a few days after Mulder's supposed suicide. Next, Scully explains reality to the real power behind Mulder's fall in Coin of Betrayal. While walking the line between the Consortium's demands and his own subversive efforts to sabotage them and possibly find a cure for Scully, Mulder meets a kindred, worldweary soul--who just happens to be a rather lovely woman. Embittered and lonely after what he believes to be his betrayal by Scully, he begins a bittersweet relationship with his new acquaintance in Interlude 1: Soft Steel.

Later, Scully and Mulder have an explosive encounter in the course of separate efforts to find the real facts of Mulder's disenfranchisement in Scene 3.

Eventually, they overcome the conspiracy against Mulder--and then the only thing they have to deal with is what has happened to their relationship as a result of the aftermath of Gethsemane. Interlude 2 and Scenes 4 and 5 deal with this.
