Western riding is an extreme expression of the Zen-like paradox that is horsemansip anywhere, anytime.

It's simple: all you have to do is get from here to there, and your horse knows how to move all four feet, in all his gaits, at any speed.

It's complex: getting there, with a reasonable margin of safety, in the form, manner, and speed you choose while social dancing with a 1000-lb. member of an alien species, now that's hard.
