to our Home Page. Who are we? We are just two "senior citizens": Erich, a retired engineer and Kathleen, a retired pre-school director. Erich built this web site for our family and friends, and for anybody who is interested in what we are up to. It reports on our family, on our travels, on our hobbies and on the animals that share our home and garden.

The Pfeiffer in 2003We have two children each and share nine grandchildren. Erich's younger son Jack and his family live in Denmark and the Pfeiffers visited them there in the spring of 2000.
Erich grew up in Germany and went to school and university there. He came to the States as a young engineer 42 years ago. We still visit Europe every few years: in the spring of 2000 we last went to Stuttgart, Germany, Erich's hometown, for the 50th anniversary of his high school graduation.
We share our house with two cats, her feline highness, the Maharani, a Himalayan, and with Miss Babette, a black kitten, born in October of 2002. Our backyard is inhabited by an extended family of (about) 12 box turtles. Other assorted wildlife includes a hummingbird mommy who for two years has build her nest in a bush in the backyard and some turkey vultures and hawks who visit occasionally and engage in fights with the crows. Coyotes and even a mountain lion (aka puma) have been sighted in the neighborhood by other people. We also had some unwanted visitors in our patio: some roof rats (species rattus rattus), who were eradicated by the joint efforts of Erich and the Maharani.
Since Erich retired at the end of 1994 we have been going on study tours with Elderhostel at least once each year. We really like this organization and have been with them to Italy and to Greece. Three times we have been to Alaska with them, the last time, in 2001, to Sitka in South-East Alaska, where we had a chance to attend a festival of the Tlingit Indians. In 1998 we spent a week with Elderhostel on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona, which got us interested in the culture of the Native Americans. So, in April of 2002 we went with Elderhostel to the Canyon de Chelly in the Navajo reservation in Arizona. This photo was taken in 2003 on another Elderhostel trip to Arizona, which brought us to Sedona and the reservation of the Hualapai Indians, along the lower Grand Canyon.

Kathleen, whose mother died of the disease, is active in the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Organization.
Together with granddaughter Katherine she is a volunteer at the Irvine Animal Care Center.
For every election she serves as a Precinct Clerk at the local voting precinct.
She is intrigued with the mysterious Jackalope and studies this elusive animal on and off the Internet.
Kathleen works on organizing reunions for her high school class and her old preschool, where she was director.

Erich enjoyed his career as an engineer and even after retirement he continues engineering work, now mainly as a hobby. This website is one of the results of his work, and if you are interested, Erich explains, how it was built.
After he retired he wrote a book: Talking to Computers  - The strange world of Software and the People who create it , which was published in November of 1999.
The Lakeview Senior Center, one of two such centers in Irvine, has a Computer Lab where Erich is a volunteer and conducts workshops on various subjects related to computers.
To prevent his German language skills from getting too rusty Erich is a volunteer translator German <> English  for a German organization  that helps people do genealogical research.
Like many people Erich also uses his website as a Soap Box to vent his opinions about certain subjects.
