This letter will introduce you to the Max Aronoff Viola Institute (“MAVI”), a summer festival held at Bastyr University in northeast Seattle (Kenmore). The 2010 Festival, June 27-July 1, 2010, will be our 20th year. You can download the 2010 brochure with application from the application page of this website. We hope you will participate in our Festival!

Here are some of the things we do at MAVI:

·         Encourage all levels of players to develop their skills to the highest level possible

·         Offer daily instrumental seminars on subjects that are applicable at all levels, such as shifting, tone, technique and phrasing

·         Offer daily coaching on orchestral excerpts and chamber music

·         Offer master classes, repertoire classes and performance opportunities for all participants.

·         Offer supplemental topics including theory, college preparation, new music and freelance skills

·         Prepare students for college/conservatory auditions.

Here are some of the things we do NOT do at MAVI:

·         Contradict technical instruction of any private teacher

·         Solicit private students for our faculty

·         Recruit for any college or school

As teachers, we know how important these ethical considerations are. Musicians who come to MAVI are presented with many approaches to playing by our faculty. We encourage everyone to consider new ideas and to notice the diversity of suggestions they receive. Participants leave our Festival with inspiration to study and practice harder, and with an increased respect for themselves as artists.

It is our sincere hope that you will apply for the 2010 MAVI Festival. Scholarships are available; scholarship information is on the application page. If, after reading this letter and the brochure, you would like any more information, we would be delighted to arrange a time to speak with you by phone. Thank you very much for your time, and we hope to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Joyce Ramée, Co-director
