Common health conditions respond to biofeedback Many common health disorders feature a significant nervous tension component that lies at the core of their development. Though it often seems like health disturbances spring from out of nowhere, the reality is that our well being is more directly influenced by the day-to-day state of our nervous system than may immediately seem obvious. In fact, a good many health afflictions are directly linked to nervous system overload, due to the daily stress producing situations we all encounter that our bodies interpret as emergencies, or even threats to our survival. When patterns of muscle clenching, elevated blood pressure, rapid shallow breathing, racing heart, and glandular excitation are repeated often enough, we tend to stop noticing them as unusual events. This can be especially true if we are motivated to increase our nervous system activity in order to be more productive, either at work or at home. You know, move faster and all that. But no matter how desirable increased productivity becomes, the sad truth is that our nervous system was never designed to function in an elevated state for indefinite periods of time. That's what leads to consequences that include health impairment. When increasing nervous system activity becomes a habit, the ability to recognize and reduce nervous tension elevation before it causes problems can be greatly diminished. From a muscle point of view, we can remain in a clenched or partially tense state long past the point when our muscles have actually been used. In these instances elevated tension can quickly become our "normal' state, which can lead to tension-related headaches, chronic muscle tightness, uncontrollable spasming, and teeth grinding for example. When it comes to glandular activity, we may find elevated levels of adrenaline or excessive sweating to be our constant companion, and even notice our body scrambling to find some reason to elevate its adrenal output whenever our adrenal levels drop too low. This may also be directly reflected in soaring levels of anxiousness, which can also cause our heart rate to race without restraint, leading to uncomfortable palpitations and feelings of panic. When unnoticed gripping makes its way into the circulatory system, we may also experience elevated blood pressure, vascular headaches including migraine, and chronically cold hands and feet. It is also true that constant nervous system activation can directly impact the body's immune system, reducing our ability to produce white blood cells and paving the way for the development of autoimmune disorders. So while it might seem as though common health problems drop out of the sky, the truth is that many health impairments are in fact a product of an out-of-balance internal environment; one that incubates them. The good news is that many nervous system-related health disorders can be corrected at their source with skillfully applied biofeedback training.
