Downloading and installing the update
Windows
- Click on the link below. When prompted whether to run the file or
save to disk, choose Save to Disk and save the update file in the
directory on your hard disk in which you have the PEP CD installed or
where you plan to store the update file (we suggest c:\pepcd). You
can use the update feature without hard disk installation of the
distribution CD-ROM, but you will
have to view the updates by separately pointing your browser at the hard
disk directory in which they are stored.
- After the update download is complete, run the file, either by
launching it from your Download Manager or by starting the Windows
Explorer, pointing it at the directory to which you downloaded the
update and double-clicking the update file name.
- You will be asked for a directory to unzip the update into. If you
installed the PEP CD or PEP CD Plus to the default directory, this
should be c:\pepcd. If you installed to a different directory, change
the specified directory to the one in which you installed the PEP CD.
Click Unzip.
- The archive is a secured, password-protected archive. You must supply the first five
characters of your registration number as a password. The registration
number is on a label on the back of the CD holder and on your invoice
for the PEP CD or CD Plus in the upper right hand corner as the "Invoice
#". Please be sure to
type the characters exactly as shown on the label. Click OK.
- You may see file overwrite warnings as the unzipping
process occurs. Allow the update to overwrite the existing files, since
this will replace the older versions with the latest ones.
- Once the unzip is completed, you're ready to use the new files.
Macintosh
- Click on the link below. When prompted whether to run the file or
save to disk, choose Save to Disk and save the update file in the
folder on your hard disk in which you have the PEP CD installed or where
you plan to store the update file (we suggest pepcd). You
can use the update feature without hard disk installation of the
distribution CD-ROM, but you will
have to view the updates by separately pointing your browser at the hard
disk directory in which they are stored.
- After the update download is complete, run the file, either by
launching it from your Download Manager or by opening the hard drive, pointing it at the
folder to which you downloaded the
update and double-clicking the update (.ZIP) file name. Most versions of
the Mac operating system have StuffIt Expander®
extensions installed as a part of the operating system, which can handle
this kind of file. If you receive an error message when you click on the
ZIP file, you have probably disabled StuffIt Expander®
and will need to reinstall or re-enable it.
- You may be asked for a folder to unzip the update
into. If you installed the PEP CD or PEP CD Plus to the default folder,
you should already have pepcd folder for this purpose. If you installed to a different
folder, change
the specified folder to the one in which you installed the PEP CD.
Click Unzip. If you have no folder for the update yet, we suggest you
use pepcd as the folder to unzip to.
Viewing the Update
- Start your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape or Firefox for most
people). Click on the browser File, Open File.. menu and point the
browser at the directory in which you placed the update files. Click on
the file you want to view and then, click OK. If you want to find out
what's new in the update, you should choose the PNOEDPRE.HTML file, Your browser should load
the file you chose.
- Note that, if you did not install the PEP CD or PEP CD Plus to your
hard disk or installed it to a different directory/folder than the one you
unzipped the update files into, you may see a page with some missing
graphics and a warning at the top of the page which reads (in part),
"The Piano Education Page uses Cascading Style Sheets to improve its
appearance. Your browser does not support CSS. You can download current
versions of Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer at no cost and
view PEP as it was intended." This error is most likely not due to
having a browser incompatible with CSS. Chances are that the browser
couldn't find the style sheets and graphics necessary to render the
page. Just make sure you point the browser to the directory in which you
installed the update and this problem should resolve.
