Notes for Robert BOLTON (chr 1718)
Robert Bolton was
a limeburner in Knottingley and may have been a publican in Knottingley as well.
The following information
is extracted from a wonderful work by Terry Spencer B.A.(Hons), Ph.D. (1998) entitled "Knottingley Public Houses & Breweries
circa 1750-1998." This article was found at www.knottingley.org/history/spencer
in February of 2006.
The names of those who
were granted licenses for Knottingley ale-houses in 1752 were: Richard Gawthre, William Walker, Thomas Scott, William Clark,
John Tomlinson, Samuel Hurst, Thomas Morris, John Wilson, Robert Bolton, William Witman, John Jackson, William Darnborough,
Thomas Gaggs, Thomas Shillitoe, Thomas Ambler, Robert Pickering, Widow Knapton, Mary Patton.
The next two paragraphs are
direct quotes from Mr. Spencer's article:
"A further interesting
feature of the 1771 list is the degree of mutual aid afforded by the local victuallers, with each standing surety for the
other, the same person being cited as guarantor in several instances. Thus, Robert
Bolton and Robert Askham supported each other's application and jointly supported the applications of Joseph Hall and Richard
Turner. Bolton and Askham both featured singly or jointly in respect of several
fellow applicants. Nor was the practice confined to Bolton and Askham for several
other applicants, individually or conjointly, provided assistance in furtherance of licence applications at this date.
"Askham was a man of considerable
wealth; a vessel owner with business interests in limestone quarrying and as such one of the foremost ratepayers within the
town. The obvious social status conferred on wealthy men such as Thomas Shillito
and Robert Askham leads one to conject that although they were the nominal licensees the properties licensed in their names
would be occupied by sub-tenants. Fellow applicants during the period 1771-1803
included small farmers and master craftsmen such as blacksmiths, both occupations by their nature closely allied to the victuallers'
trade."

BOLTON and Elizabeth ___________ were as follows:

Joseph BOLTON , son of Robert and Elizabeth Bolton, was christened
29 Jun 1746 in Pontefract Parish. He was buried 12 Jun 1778 in Newton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. He married Catherine ___________. Catherine was born about 1747.
She was buried in Newton-on-Ouse on 20 October 1819.
Notes for Joseph BOLTON
I believe that Joseph
Bolton was originally from Knottingley where lime burning and the transport of lime was big business in the mid-1700s. Joseph likely made his living in the transport of lime
via the Aire River to the River Ouse and then up the Ouse to York and beyond. I
have not found a marriage record for him but we know that he and his wife were residing in the parish of Newton-on-Ouse by
at least 1769 when their son Robert was born.
I don't know if Joseph's
wife Catherine was originally from the area of Newton-on-Ouse or if she was from Joseph Bolton's home village. Another possibility would be that she was from a village that was on Joseph's route along the river. He must have stopped in various locations on his trips and would have had opportunities
to meet many people along his route.
Joseph Bolton, lime merchant,
was buried in Newton-on-Ouse in June of 1778. He left a wife and a young family. In March of 1779 Catherine Bolton married Joseph
Berkinshaw in the parish of Newton-on-Ouse and there were children from this union.
Joseph Berkinshaw was Catholic so their children were baptized in the Catholic Church as well as the Church of England. I do not think that Joseph Berkinshaw was originally from the area of Newton-on-Ouse.
The children of Joseph
and Catherine Bolton were as follows:
Robert BOLTON , christened 5 Jan 1768/69 in near Newton-on-Ouse
Mary BOLTON , buried 21 Oct 1771 in Newton-on-Ouse
Joseph BOLTON, born 23 Aug 1772 in Newton-on-Ouse; buried 1772 in Newton-on-Ouse, infant.
Joseph
BOLTON, probably born about 1773 in or near Newton-on-Ouse, married on 15 May 1809 in Newton-on-Ouse, England, Jane (MEDLEY) (see below)
Elizabeth BOLTON
was born ___________. She married John
BELL. Their
son was:
John Bell, born in 1797 and lived in Newton-on-Ouse. This John Bell, the son of John Bell and Elizabeth (Bolton) Bell,
married Mary Lambert in Newton-on-Ouse on 31 Dec 1817. The children of
John Bell and Mary (Lambert) Bell were: Robert Bell (1818) ** , William Bell (1820) *** , Elizabeth Bell (aka Bessy Bell) **** (1824), Moses Bell /Moyses Bell (1828) ***** , Francis Bell (1832) and Jonas Bell (1834).
The children of Catherine (widow of Joseph Bolton) and her second husband, Joseph
Berkinshaw:
Thomas Berkinshaw, christened 27 Jan 1781, Linton-on-Ouse
Ann Berkinshaw, christened 1783, Linton-on-Ouse. She married John Burton. The children of John and Ann (Berkinshaw) Burton were:
Mary Burton
(1804); Robert Burton (1805); John Burton (1807); Joseph Burton (1810); Catherine Burton (1812); Ann Burton (1815); Sarah Burton (1817); Catherine Burton (1820); Elizabeth Burton (1822-1822).
Catherine Berkinshaw, christened 23 January 1785, Linton-on-Ouse;
buried 25 Mar 1789; age 4.
Sarah Berkinshaw,
chr. 15 Jun 1787, Linton-on-Ouse
Mary Berkinshaw, chr. 8 Sep 1790, Linton-on-Ouse;
married James Pinder/Pindar, 26 Aug 1815, Linton-on-Ouse.
Their daughter, Sarah Pindar/Sarah Pinder, was born in 1817.
Generation 6
Joseph BOLTON , son of Joseph and Catherine
Bolton, was born about 1773 in or near Newton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, England and probably died in either Canada or America. He married on 15 May 1809 in Newton-on-Ouse, Jane
(MEDLEY). Jane was born about 1782.
Notes for Joseph BOLTON
Joseph Bolton married
Jane Robinson (nee Jane Medley or Jane Meadley) by Banns at Newton on Ouse on 15 May 1809.
He signed; she marked (X). The witnesses at their wedding are listed as
"Thomas Wright" and "Michael Burton."
Notes for Jane MEDLEY
In 1804, Jane Medley
married John Robinson in York (Saint Olave’s). I believe, but I am not
sure, that Jane and John Robinson had a son named William on 25 March 1806. Two
years later, in May of 1809, the Newton parish records indicate that a John Robinson died.
This may have been Jane's husband. Jane married Joseph Bolton in Newton-on-Ouse
in 1809.
Children of Joseph
BOLTON and Jane MEDLEY were as follows:
Elizabeth
BOLTON , born 5 Mar 1810 in Yorkshire, England; christened 10 Mar 1810
in Linton on Ouse, Yorkshire, England. She married on 31 Jan 1828 in St.Olave’s
in the City of York, England, Samuel WALKER
, who was born about 1808.
Robert BOLTON , christened 26 Jan 1812 in Linton on Ouse, Yorkshire, England.
Robert Bolton signed a Declaration of Intention (to become a naturalized U.S.
citizen) on 10 December 1846 at the Circuit Court of the United States for the state of Michigan. It states that he was born in Yorkshire, England; emigrated from England sailing from the port of Hull
in the year 1832 and arrived in the U.S. in the same year; he arrived in the state of Michigan in 1834 and "intends to settle
and remain in the county of Wayne in said State." Michigan
records include Robert Bolton's name in their index for this petition, but they do not have a date recorded for his final
oath. This may indicate that Robert Bolton did not stay in this same area. WHERE DID HE GO? WHY CAN'T WE FIND ANY
OTHER RECORD FOR HIM?
Joseph BOLTON , born 16 Feb 1814; christened 20 Feb
1814 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England. The sponsors listed at Joseph's christening were
"Thos. Bland" and "Isab. Coupland." Joseph must have died before 12 May 1815
when his brother was born and was also named Joseph. I have not found a record
of his death.
Joseph BOLTON , born 12 May 1815; christened 21 May
1815 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England. The sponsors listed at Joseph's christening were
"Thos. Pratt" and "Elizabeth Hunter."
John BOLTON , born 5 Aug 1816; christened 18 Aug
1816 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England. The sponsors listed at John's christening were
"John Walker" and "Ann Boggott."
Thomas BOLTON , born 12 Nov 1818; christened 14 Nov
1818 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England; buried 31 Mar 1820 in
St. Olave's Church, York, England. The sponsors listed for Thomas' christening were "Thos. Spink"
and "Eliz. Chambers." I believe this burial record at St. Olave’s
Church in the City of York pertains to Thomas Bolton #781: Buried, Thomas Bolton,
infant, 31 Mar 1820. Abode: Marygate.
Theresa Catherine BOLTON , born 7 Mar 1821; christened 11 Mar
1821 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England. The sponsors listed for Theresa's christening
were "Wm. Kendal" and "Maria Wilson."
Thomas Francis BOLTON , born 30 Jan 1823; christened 4 Feb 1823 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England; buried 11 Mar 1824 in St. Olave’s Church, York, England. The sponsors listed at the christening of Thomas
Francis Bolton were "Thoma Spink" and "Catharine Anne Marshall."
I believe this record from St. Olave’s Church in the City of York pertains to Thomas Francis Bolton #783: Buried,
11 Mar 1824, Thomas Bolton. Abode: Marygate.
Aged 13 months.
Thomas George BOLTON , born 26 Apr 1824 in Yorkshire, England; christened 2 May 1824 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England; died 22 Jun 1906 in Stockton, San Joaquin, CA; buried
25 Jun 1906 in Stockton, San Joaquin,
CA. The sponsors listed at the christening of Thomas were "Ric: Nettleton" and "Catherina Marshall." Church records record his birth as 26 April 1824 but the birth
date listed on his death certificate is 24 March 1824. He was age 82 at death.
In 1860, Thomas and James and family lived near San Leandro, Alameda County, California,
according to the federal census. I believe they then moved to San Mateo County
(near Half Moon Bay?) in approximately 1866, where Nellie Bolton was born and where Thomas is listed on the voters’
registration. They were living near Porterville, California,
in 1870 and 1871, in an area called "Mountain View." I believe that Thomas' brother
James died in 1875. In 1880 the rest of the family are on the federal census
for Murray Township, Alameda County, California. I believe they may have lived
in the little town of Sunol. Later the family moved to Stockton.
+ James Francis BOLTON (see below)
Samuel
BOLTON , born
27 Dec 1828 in Yorkshire,
England; christened 11 Jan 1829 in Little Blake Street Church, York, England; buried 10 Oct 1829 in St. Olave’s Church, York, England. Samuel's sponsors at his christening were "William
Clout" and "Catharina Rowntree." I believe this record
from St. Olave’s Church in the City of York pertains to Samuel Bolton #784: Buried, Samuel Boulton, 10 Oct 1829. Abode: Marygate. Infant.

James Francis BOLTON , son of Joseph and Jane Bolton,
was born 28 Jun 1826 in the City of York, Yorkshire, England; christened 2 Jul 1826 in Little Blake Street Church in the City of York. He probably
died 28 Jun 1875 in San Benito County, CA. He married Isabella CURTIS about 1858. Isabella Curtis was born 21 Jan 1840 in or near Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, England; christened 28 Jan 1840
in Linton-on-Ouse. She died 5 May 1901 in Stockton, San Joaquin, CA. She was the daughter of Matthew CURTIS and Frances DUVIVIER ("Fanny DuVivier") .
Notes for Isabella CURTIS
With her family,
Isabella emigrated from England to the U.S. at age 9. They departed from Liverpool
and arrived at the port of New York on the ship Ivanhoe on 19 Oct 1849.
Children of James
Francis BOLTON and Isabella CURTIS were as follows:
Alfred
Curtis BOLTON (1859-1933)
(Unknown) BOLTON
Thomas Charles (1865-1925)
Isabelle Frances BOLTON ("Nellie") , born Dec 1867 in San Mateo County, CA; died 31 Mar 1936; buried
3 Apr 1936 in Stockton, San Joaquin, CA, Rural Cemetery. She married (1) Clarence H. CORR , born about 1875 in New Jersey; (2)
Edwin Winslow DOUGLAS , born 6 Dec 1866 in IA; died 13 Apr 1939 in Rural Cemetery, Stockton, CA
Clara Isabelle BOLTON , born Mar 1870; died 29 Jan 1913
in Stockton, San Joaquin, CA; buried in Stockton, San Joaquin, CA. She married on 20 Jun 1889 in Merced, Merced, CA Albert Lorenzo SMITH [373],
born about 1865 in CA
Joseph
DuVivier BOLTON (born 1871 in California; died 1953 in Hustler, Wisconsin)
John Francis
BOLTON (1874-1948)
Elodia May BOLTON , born 6 Dec 1875 in CA; died 11 Dec 1957 in French Camp, San Joaquin, CA. She
married (1) Henry E. STRANG ("Harry") [366], born about 1871 in CA;
(2) _________TREEST
There
may be important clues in Elodia's census information for 1910, 1920 and 1930. In
1910 and 1920 her father's place of birth is listed as New York. In the 1930
census it is listed as New Orleans. This may help illuminate the migration path
taken by the Bolton family. The 1930 census information regarding New Orleans
also comports with another story in the family: that four Bolton brothers traveled down the Mississippi River from Chicago
to the area of New Orleans. Two of the brothers stayed there and two of the brothers
went on to California.
