Weather Equipment

The Weather Station
This is Oregon Scientific WRM-968 wireless weather station. This is the weather station that is collecting the data that you see on my weather pages. The weather was installed on the weekend of April 14, 2001. I am still finishing the final installation of the sensors and transmitters but that should be complete in a week or two. As soon as the installation is complete, I will include a few pictures of my handy work. WRM-968

The Search for the Station

In early January of 2001, my brother, Danny, was visiting from Kansas. We decided to visit our local Fry's. There, we happened upon the weather stations. Fry's sold weather stations from two different companies, Oregon Scientific and Davis Instruments. I noticed that the Davis stations were much more expensive than the Oregon stations. Danny and I knew that this is exactly what our Dad would love to have. I decided to do a little research to find which station would best Dad. A little reseach turned into three months of exhaustive research. The more I read, the more excited I became. Not for Dad, but for myself!

I finally made the decision to but a station sometime in mid-March. As I did my research, I found Davis had just introduced a weather station named the Vantage Pro . Considering the price and feature set, I believe the Vantage Pro is probably the better weather station. The only problem is hasn't shipped yet and isn't supposed to start until May 2001. In software, we call this "Vaporware".

The lowest price I found on the internet was $329 for the WRM-968. The next lowest was $380 at a few sites and the next was $400. I started looking on E-Bay and found that one company was flooding E-Bay with WRM-968's starting around $150 but with a reserve. I never found out what the reserve was, but it was higher than $315. I finally one company on E-Bay where I could directly buy a station for $301. The name of the seller was estuff4less.com. I was very statisifed with her response to my e-mails and delivery of the weather station. I would definitely do business with her again. Don't be fooled into thinking you are going to get a WRM-968 for less than $300 because the auction price starts less than $200, it won't happen!

The Installation of the Station

Currently, the WRM-968's console is connected to our kid's Windows 98 system. I have a Windows 95 system that I would rather connect it to, but it is in my office. Eventually, we will get a second console to put in the office. At that point, I will also add a web cam so you can not only the weather, but also all the kids in the neighborhood playing. The software I am using is Ambient's Virual Weather Station software. I am very pleased with it so far. I only have a dial-up connection to the internet at this point so the ftp upload's struggle somewhat. That will change when Earthlink gets DSL into our neighborhood.
