Jonathan Elliott studied composition with Annea Lockwood and piano with Todd Crow at Vassar College (AB Music 1984), and as a fellowship student of Ralph Shapey and Shulamit Ran at the University of Chicago (AM Composition 1986, PhD Composition 1988). He has received awards and honors for his compositions from, among others, the New York State Council on the Arts, ASCAP, BMI, FORUM 91/UNESCO, Aspen Music Festival, the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Chicago Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, American Composers Forum, W.K. Rose Trust, the International Festival of New Music at Darmstadt (Germany), the Ragdale Foundation, and the Jerome Foundation. He is composer-in-residence at Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn Heights. HOMMAGE A B.B. can be heard on "Dreamscape," a Koch International Classics CD featuring Heidi Grant Murphy and Aureole. FIELD MUSIC: SPIRAL, commissioned for Aureole by the American Composers Forum and the Jerome Foundation, was premiered at the Currier Gallery, Manchester NH, in February, with subsequent performances in Baltimore, The Raritan River Music Festival, and NYC's Bargemusic in the 1999-2000 concert season. CIRCLE, for piano and digital tape, was premiered at the Kunen Theater in Washington DC as part of the CROSSCURRENTS concert series on April 6, 2000. ODD PRELUDES, commissioned by saxophonist Jonathan Helton, was premiered at the 2000 World Saxophone Congress, University of Quebec, Montreal, on July 7, 2000. ODD PRELUDES has received numerous performances throughout the US since its premiere. Elliott has received a 2000 Individual Artist Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts for work on the score of the film GIVEN FISH. FRISS, for flute and guitar, was commissioned by the duo of Laura Gilbert and Antigoni Goni and premiered at the Harid Conservatory, Boca Raton, Florida, on 13 February 2001. FRISS received its NYC premiere at the Onassis Foundation in May 2001. I DREAM (I HEAR) NEFERTITI, commissioned by Vassar College in honor of composer Annea Lockwood, was premiered on 6 April 2001 at Skinner Hall with the composer performing. ODD PRELUDES has been performed numerous times this season. A JOYFUL NOISE--commissioned by Saint Ann's School for the 2001 Convocation--for mixed chorus, winds, strings, piano and percussion, was premiered in June 2001 in Brooklyn by the Saint Ann's Singers. FRISS was performed in March at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles as part of the Guitar Masters series. The Greek guitar virtuoso Antigoni Goni was joined by Laura Gilbert, flutist.


New movements of A HISTORY OF SENSATION include ONOYOKONO for voice and recorded sounds. SEVEN PRELUDES, commissioned by award-winning pianist Kevin Sharpe and dedicated to the American Liszt Society, will be premiered at the University of Florida, Gainesville FL, in late March 2003. Soprano Heidi Grant Murphy, Aur?ole, and guests, have recorded three new arrangements of Spanish and Brazilian music for a new CD slated for release in spring 2003 on Koch International Classics. Jonathan Elliott has signed with LUX NOVA PRESS, music publishers, effective January 2003. EPIPHANY will be recorded by saxophonist Jonathan Helton in summer 2003.

 

HOMMAGE A B.B. was lauded by Paul Griffiths of the NEW YORK TIMES, who called it "excellent...darkly and lusciously scored..." This work, for soprano, alto flute and viola, has been called "haunting and ethereal..." (Amazon.com) and is available on DREAMSCAPE (Koch International Classics).
