Let's talk about the role of sound reinforcement at a gig. Hiring a sound company is supposed to make your life easier, make you sound better and show that you are a professional act that stands to be reckoned with. How many times has the experience been the exact opposite where the sound crew gives you problems, doesn't comprehend your equipment needs, lacks the equipment you need, doesn't understand the fundamentals of mic placement, mixing and equalization and your gig ends up a disaster? How many times have they shown up late, cancelled at the last minute or not shown up at all? Let's face it, the sound company should be the first ones at the gig and the last to leave. A two hour show for a band is an all day affair for the sound crew. Professional sound & lighting companies have all but abandoned "local" venues because it is not cost effective for the time spent versus the dollars received, so all that's left are some guys who own a few PA cabinets & think they understand what is involved in providing truly superior sound. Other bands have purchased their own equipment only to lack the expertise and personnel to effectively utilize said equipment and end up mixing the band from the stage. As any pro knows, as the conditions change throughout the show, (crowd size, temperature, stage volume adjustments, mic repositioning, etc.) the mix must constantly be adjusted to compensate. Solos must be brought to the front, channels must be adjusted for mic placement changes, effects must be tweaked for individual preference, monitor mixes must be massaged and any CDs or "canned music" must be introduced at the correct time in the program.
