This web page is based upon an experiment that I did two years ago when I upgraded my genealogy software. Not wanting to "mess up" my own family genealogy while struggling to learn the new software; I picked out the Powahatan family of Virginia to "practice on." I had two reasons for chosing this family to work on: firstly they are related to me by marriage through the Catlett family; secondly I was annoyed that all the genealogies that I found started with Pocahantas and ignored all of her blood family in favor of her Rolf family. So my experiment was to see if I could build a workable genealogy of Pocahantas' native family. I did run into several key problems; the first was a lack of material and the second was the lack of surnames, the acceptance of English nicknames, and changing native names. I'm not at all satisfied with my solutions regarding the usage of names; any confusion or errors are mine alone. I know that there are people out there who know a lot more about this family then I could ever know. But I felt that this experiment is worth publishing in the hope that others will correct and increase this work. All errors are mine based on imperfect research materials and lack of time and effort. The Powhatan Weroance of the Powhatan had the following children:

+ 2 i.Emperor Wahunsenacawh² Powhatan was born circa 1547.

3 ii.Emperor Opichapam Itoyatin Sasawpen Powhatan was born in Powhatan Tribe, Virginia about 1550. Opichapam died before 1620 in Tsenacomoca, Virginia. Younger half-brother of Powhatan, succeded his brother as Mamanatowick/Emperor of the Powhatan Confederancey in April 1618. At the time of his succession as Mamanatowick/Emperor he changed his name to Itoyatin. He was a weak and quiet ruler. Most of the royal power was held by another half-brother, Opechancanough, who was to be his successor.

+ 4 iii.Emperor Opechancanough Mangopeesomon Powhatan was born about 1554.

5 iv.Apachamo Kekataugh Powhatan Weroance Pamunkey was born in Powhatan Tribe, Virginia about 1557. Apachamo died at an unknown date in Tsenacomoca, Virginia.

+ 6 v.Princess First Sister Powhatan was born about 1560.

+ 7 vi.Princess Second Sister Powhatan was born about 1562.

He married twice. He married Winganuske of an Unknown Tribe at Tsenacomoca, Virginia.He married Regent Oholasc Quiqoughcohtan before 1600 in Powhatan Tribe, Virginia.

Powhatan began as the Werowance (often translated by the English as King) of the Powhatan Tribes which lived south of the falls of the James River. Through marriages between noble families of the pervious generation, Powhatan had inherited power over eight tribes. These were the Arrohateck, Appamatuck, Orapaks, Youghtanund, Pamunkey, Mattaponi, Werowocomoce, and Kiskiack. In the 30 or so years after Powhatan assumed rule over these tribes, he had conquered about 20 more tribes. His title at that point was that of Mamanatowick (often translated by the British as Emperor) of the Powhatan Confederacey

Uttamatomakkin died at age unknown. She married an unknown person date unknown. She married Kwiokos Uttamatomakkin Tomocomo of an Unknown Tribe before 1616 in Powhatan Tribe, Virginia. Uttamatomakkin died at age unknown.

+ 12 v.Princess Amonute Matoake Pocahontas Rebecca Powhatan was born circa 1595.

13 vi.Princess Third Daughter Powhatan was born in the Tsenacomoca, Virginia after 1598.

John was born circa 1585 in England. John died circa 1623 in England. Conflicting evidence states that John was born circa 1565 in England.⁽¹⁾

30. Weroance Nectowance³ Powhatan (Emperor Opechancanough Mangopeesomon², Weroance of the Powhatan¹) was born in Tsenacomoca, Virginia before 1600. Nectowance died after 1645 in New Kent Co., Virginia.

Assumed to be son of Opechoncanough. Signed Treaty with the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1645, at which time he was called by the English "King of the Indians"

31. Princess Nicketti³ Powhatan (Emperor Opechancanough Mangopeesomon², Weroance of the Powhatan¹) was born before 1644. Nicketti died after 1720 at age unknown.
