From Cyndie (Clements)

Dear Family & Friends;

  My apologies for not updating you all sooner on Dad's progress. Things have been pretty crazy. Daddy has been in Rehab for two weeks yesterday and the greatest improvement we have seen has been in his speech. His other Medical P.O.A. and I met with the staff at his current rehab facility yesterday and we were less than pleased with what they had to say and in general, how they have cared for him. They were insistent on a discharge date of 10/17, regardless of his progress. They also recommended he be discharged to a Skilled Nursing facility where he would receive a maximum of three hours of therapy per week.

  This morning he is being moved to a different rehab facility in the hope that he will receive a better quality of care and more intense rehabilitation. According to the new facility they believe that they can provide him with an additional 12-16 days of intensive inpatient therapy before making the “go home” decision.

  At this point his speech has improved tremendously.  He is able to speak clearly when he takes the time to enunciate his words and practices the other techniques that the Speech Therapists have taught him.

  He hasn’t been eating as well as we would like him to but we are taking him all of his favorite foods and helping him eat whenever necessary. He is still unable to walk and his balance is poor. The good news is that he is still relatively strong and does have movement in all of his limbs. His right side is uncoordinated but the coordination in his right arm seems to be improving. It is difficult for me to assess the coordination in his right leg at this time. However, he did attempt to walk on his own, without help yesterday and took a nosedive. (He had no major injuries from his fall, just bumps and bruises.) He said that he could stand up “OK” but that was it. He truly wants to walk (wouldn’t we all in his shoes?)

  The facility he is going to has a gadget called an “Auto-ambulator.” It looks sort of like a robotic sling that holds the patient upright and has straps that attach to the legs that actually “do” the walking. My understanding is that the patient is fully weight bearing during this therapy. Its’ purpose is to assist in the re-growth or re-routing of the nerve pathways from the legs, up the spinal cord, to the brain and back. This gadget not only stimulates muscle memory but also helps some patients regain some if not all of their balance. I do not know at this point if he is a candidate for this type of therapy. He will be assessed for it during his stay at the facility. Here is a much better explanation for those of you who are interested:

  I have read that this was first developed by NASA to assist astronauts on the Shuttle and at the International Space Station. I read it on the Internet so it must be true right? ;-p

  Mom is holding up as well as can be expected, I think. She has around the clock caregivers and hospice personnel who assess her at least weekly. They have tweaked her medication to help her rest/sleep a bit better.

  I don't have a room or telephone number for Dad at this time. He is going to :

  HealthSouth City View Rehabilitation Hospital 6701 Oakmont Blvd. Fort Worth, TX 76132

  Thank you so much for you calls, cards, prayers and support. Please believe me when I tell you they mean a ton to all of us.

  Very Sincerely,

  Cyndie (Clements)
