Appalachia's
granny women used their intimate
knowledge
of mountain flora and fauna to create
poultices,
plasters, teas, and through the power
of
symbolism, charms to promote health,
healing,
love, and happiness, to protect loved
ones
from harm, and to charm friends and
enemies
alike. Blackberry Hill Heirlooms updates
this
tradition with elegant, handmade charms crafted
in
deep, rich velvets and adorned with glittering beads
and
ribbons of satin or gauze. A perfect gift for a
wedding,
anniversary, housewarming, or just to
cheer
up your best friend. Your choice of items
symbolizes
one wish or many, and you can specify
a
color to be emphasized in the adornment of your
charm.
Each charm comes with a list of contents
and
the wish or purpose they symbolize.

POPPETS AND POPPET KITS
Appalachian
women, like mountain women as
far
back as anyone can remember, have used
"binding
spells" to attract love to their lives.
One
of the oldest spells on earth employs poppets
--simple
dolls stuffed with symbolic herbs--
to
attract love. Each night, the young woman
kisses
the poppets--bound together with ribbon--
thinks
about the attributes she wants her love
to
have, and places the poppets under her pillow.
Once
the spell has worked, the poppets must be
hidden
where no one can ever find them, and
the
ribbon must never be removed.
If
found or unbound, the spell is broken. Start a
tradition
in your family by giving your daughter,
niece,
or granddaughter a poppet as her rite of
passage
into young womanhood. Or replace the
wedding
unity candle with poppets by binding the
poppets
together during the wedding ceremony
as
a symbol of commitment and fidelity.
Poppet
kits contain pre-cut fabric, ribbon to bind
the
poppets, symbolic herbs used for stuffing, and
instructions
on how to assemble, sew,
stuff,
and use the poppets.
