1960s Model Car Decals

These decal sheets are all from AMT model car kits from the early- to mid-1960s. I actually owned each of the kits that provided these decals, and as you can see, I even used some of them. But the rest I saved, thinking perhaps that I would eventually employ them on some yet-to-be-conceived project. That never happened, but throughout the years I have appreciated the artwork, so I thought I'd throw it out here to cyberspace to see if anyone else could find some inspiration in these images for their own creative endeavors. I will, however, explain one thing about one of the decals: I am, of course, aware of the Confederate flag image. I find it, when used as it is depicted in this decal, offensive. I thought I might remove it from the scan, but then I decided to leave it in an accurate representation of the mentality of a different era. It was there, and I'm not going to hide it. At about the same time that these decals were being made, the Lindberg company of Skokie, Illinois was also making scale model kits, and they didn't include swastikas for their models of Nazi warplanes. For more on that, click here. I guess I could kind of understand that the folks in Skokie didn't want kids taking the swastika decals and sticking them up on Aunt Goldie's refrigerator. But on the other hand, swastikas and Confederate flags are a part of history and we shouldn't try to airbrush them out. For historical depictions, even of model cars from the 1960s, they reflect the reality. For state flags in the 21st century, however, they're entirely inappropriate.

Clicking on the images will take you to large (about 250%), relatively high resolution scans, whose size is indicated by the numbers under the images on this page. If you are using a later version of Internet Explorer, it will shrink the image down to fit the browser window, but you can restore it to full size by floating your pointer over the lower right corner and clicking when you see the icon appear.
