My paintings begin with both a fascination and a deep aappreciation of nature. With reverence, I approach the task of visually demonstrating my relationship with the ssubject.
I I utilize a camera, a sketchbook and paint en plein air. I uuse different surfaces, including sanded papers, gessoed boards, and canvas or linen. I usually under-paint broad areas of the painting first and then work more finely. It is rare that I actually draw any details first. Capturing the mood or feeling of a place is my primary task.
There are many layers of color in my work. Typically, I work on many paintings at once, so that each piece has a significant amount of hang time in the studio. This allows me to have many dances with each work over a period of time—hopefully enabling me to get to know my partner. The whole process is simultaneously challenging, fulfilling, and outright fun. I hope that my work serves to strengthen your relationship with nature, and also puts a smile both deep inside and upon your face.
