Winter is half over!  February 2nd is midway between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox.  The Pagan calendar includes the 'cross quarter' days for celebration so that 8 markers of the year are acknowledged. (solstices & equinoxes are the four cardinal pathways of the Sun)   'Imbolc' translates to mean "in the belly".  We are pregnant with the promise of spring and new birth.  Another name for this holy day is 'Candlemas'.  The Roman calendar calls this 'groundhog day' & it is a portent of Spring.  The pagans were on the lookout for serpents or badgers peeking their noses out of 'Big Mamma's belly to see the Sun at this time of the year.

As it turns out, this year the Full Moon coincides with Imbolc!

Two of the more familiar cross-quarter days are 'Beltane' or May Day, and 'Samhain' or Halloween.
Fire and purification is considered by many to be an important aspect of this festival. Brigid (also known as Brighid, Bríde, Brigit, Brìd) is the Goddess of poetry, healing and smithcraft. As both goddess and saint she is also associated with holy wells, sacred flames, and healing. To some, the lighting of candles and fires represents the return of warmth and the increasing power of the Sun over the coming months (text from Wikipedia)  Brigid also loves to eat, so today's a great day to feast.

In today's Global Warming context, cycles of the seasons take on new meaning.  The natural world is no longer natural, and getting more unreliable.  Unconscionable abuse of  Mother Earth prompts sincere offerings to the Goddesses for a positive outcome to the crisis.  Often in life, a situation that ostensibly appears disastrous eventually  evolves into a situation that's better than ever.   Imbolc is also called the 'Festival of the Lights', when fires are lit..  Perhaps the mythic phoenix rising out of the ashes is an appropriate vision to cultivate on this holy day?
