Our Last "Wow! That’s Engineering! "
Atlanta, GA, May 12, 2007

Welcome of behalf of SWE Atlanta and Georgia Power:  Louise Scott, Director of Customer Care Service, Georgia Power. Ms Scott holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the U of Florida and a minor in Fine Arts.  She related to the young women with sports.
Keynote speaker: Cathy Hill, Region Distribution Manager, Georgia Power.  Ms. Hill gave a motivational address that personalized her story as a black woman, her entry into the study of engineering and subsequent professional experiences.
Both were upbeat, fun and connected with the girls.

Adult Volunteers: Total 34
Southern Company, 10
IBM, 6
KCC 6Other companies, 7
Parents, 6
Girls (mid school)
Pre-registered:  227
Attended: 121, plus 30 or so walk-ins/siblings.

More girls came to the event as ‘walk-ons’ than we expected; some came in groups with YWCA staff or Girl Scout leaders. Also, some parents brought groups of girls. We found that many girls who pre-registered did not attend.  Attendance of girls from under-represented groups was at least one-third.

Parents
A parent track was not planned. It became apparent through emails to the section during the last week of preparation that parents wanted to stay and watch the activities. Rather than deny parents access to the event, the local planning committee arranged a discussion with the speaker and the corporate host. HQ provided parent hand-outs from the event-in-the-box materials and participated in the panel. Parents received a tour of the activity classrooms and joined the girls in making SWE lip gloss. Attended: approximately 50.

Activities
Agilent After School Kits: Kalimba Piano, Catch a Thief, Newton’s Cars, SWE Lip Gloss.
