ERDC'S HOLIDAY AROUND THE WORLD HOLIDAY MIXER

SAVE THE DATE: PALSD/FALSD ANNUAL DINNER

Jan. 28. Please save the date for the Joint PALSD/FALSD Annual Dinner, featuring keynote speaker Jeff Adachi, the Public Defender of the City and County of San Francisco. Mr. Adachi is past president of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area and the San Francisco Japanese American Citizen's League. In addition, Mr. Adachi is a past recipient of the California State Bar Association's Hufstedler Award for public service, the Asian American Bar Association's Joe Morozumi Award for exceptional legal advocacy, and in 2003, was honored by the Asian American Bar Association of the Silicon Valley. A well-known advocate for people of color, Mr. Adachi has also directed two documentaries about media portrayals of Asian Americans: “The Slanted Screen” and “You Don’t Know Jack: The Jack Soo Story.”

LEGAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

PALSD/FALSD 2010 CA STATE BAR EXAM SCHOLARSHIP

PALSD and FALSD will grant at least 4 scholarships to eligible individuals to take the California State Bar examination in February 2010 or July 2010. Scholarship recipients will be honored at the PALSD/FALSD Annual Dinner on Jan. 28, 2010, and scholarship recipients MUST attend the Annual Dinner to receive the scholarship. Application Deadline: Dec. 11, 2009. See Announcement and Application for eligibility requirements and selection factors.

NAPABA ANNOUNCEMENT

NAPABA Seeks Policy Director in D.C. Headquarters. The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association seeks a committed advocate to serve as Policy Director in NAPABA’s D.C. headquarters. The Policy Director works closely with NAPABA’s committees, the NAPABA Board, and NAPABA affiliates to promote diversity in the legal profession and justice, equity, and opportunity for Asian Pacific Americans.

Qualifications: Demonstrated commitment to advancing social justice for Asian Pacific Americans and a passion for building consensus among diverse advocates within an organization or an issue-based coalition, excellent writing abilities, and an ability to work independently are a must. Excellent time-management skills, detail oriented focus, oral communication ability, and strong interpersonal skills are also required. Applicants with legislative experience or a law degree are especially encouraged to apply. Experience working with media is a plus. Some travel and at times, evening and weekend work, are required.

IMMIGRATION JUSTICE PROJECT OF SAN DIEGO TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

The ABA Immigration Justice Project will be offering the foregoing training sessions for attorneys interested in becoming involved in the pro bono program. Contact Liz Sweet at sweete@staff.abanet.org or 619-699-2930 for more info. and to RSVP and confirm training locations.

Nov. 10, 2-4:30pm. Cancellation of Removal for Lawful Permanent Residents
*This training will address eligibility for cancellation of removal, case preparation and immigration court procedure. Cancellation of removal is a form of relief for individuals with at least 7 years of lawful presence in the United States. This training is free for those intending to accept a pro bono case.

Nov. 18, 12-1:30pm. Immigration Law 101

Dec. 14, 12-1:30pm. Defending Immigrants in Removal Proceedings
*This brown bag lunch training is offered monthly and is geared to those new to immigration court practice. Forms of relief and the variety of opportunities are discussed. This training is free for those interested in accepting a case. We request 1 hour of CLE credit for this training.

Jan. 28-29. Two Day Immigration Court Training
* More details will be forthcoming, but topics will include:
· Custody/bond
· Cancellation of removal
· Asylum, withholding and Convention Against Torture
· Immigration court procedure
· Appeals to the BIA and Ninth Circuit
