Oak Grove Road to Pollocksville

Trip Leader Brian Leavy

TRIP DESCRIPTION - Nice, peaceful 7 mile trip down a fairly wide stretch of the Trent River. We should have a little current with us, but unless there is a deluge right before our trip, the current should be pretty slow. Almost immediately after the put-in, you will notice the lack of development. (a military OLF is on our left for about 5 miles) It continues on this way until we near the town of Pollocksville at the take-out. Hopefully, we will see the turning leaves of autumn. About 1/2 way down, we stop for a lunch and rest break. We may have a Port-A-Let available here. Various forms of wildlife should also be encountered along the way. It's a beautiful trip. Last year, we had over 25 people for this trip.

DIRECTIONS TO PUT IN - Heading north on route 17, go about a mile past the bridge over the Trent in Pollocksville and turn left on Killis-Murphy Road , (almost a left fork). Proceed .1 mile and turn left on Oak Grove Road. Go about 3 miles and put in will be 200-300 yards beyond the bridge, on the left. The only good place on the bank. Take care as the muddy bank can be very slippery.
Heading south on 17, turn right on Killis -Murphy Road. then see above.
Coming down 58 from Kinston, you can turn left on Oak Grove Road to the put in or follow it to 17 and turn left.

Trip meets or exceeds expectations. Weather was great. Current was present, but not a factor. GPS would not display a speed except to toggle between 0 and .5 mph. This could also be a good paddle up river from the take out in Pollocksville or up river from the put in.

A short exploratory paddle up river from the put in.

The mystery tank in the river.
