Proper Flag Etiquette

Below you will find a few well known and maybe not so well known rules for displaying our flag.

When displaying the American flag on a stage, meeting room or altar, it should be at the right hand side of the speaker as he/she faces the audience, with all other flags on the left. When grouped with other flags the American flag should always be at the center and at the highest point. When on a staff, the flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly. When displayed with other flags on several staffs, it should be raised first and lowered last.

When the flag is hung on a wall, the stars should always be at the flag's top right and the observer's left. The flag should always be displayed in a place of honor. When flying the flag at home, it can be displayed from sunrise to sunset, and should be taken in at night unless illuminated by a light, or for a patriotic event. When displaying it on a vehicle it should hang free and not drape over the vehicle. It can be tied to the antenna or to a staff that is attached firmly to the vehicle.

The flag should always be displayed on national holidays. The flag should never be used as a piece of clothing. It should not be folded up and used as decorations. It should never be marked or have anything attached to it. And it should never be allowed to touch the ground.
