These are the Official Answers
for the 2017 Independence Day Fireworks.

We posted them here on August 9.

In addition, earlier in the week we mailed the answers to all competitors.

The answers and explanations below are identical to those sent in the mail, which also include
the procedure for filing a protest (i.e., an objection, due by August 18) regarding any answer.

Following scoring, we'll post here any protest results and we'll print and mail everybody a complete set of results.

August 19 update: two questions were affected by protests:

Q5. We'll score 'c' correct as well as 'd'. The lake's identification says 'Mille', not 'Milles'.

Q34. We'll score 'a' correct as well as 'b'. It's not clear that, when eastbound upon principal highway at Lake Village, we would reach a junction with the gray other road there.

Final results will be mailed as soon as we have them from the printer, in about 7 days.

A note regarding Crazy Eights scoring:

The answers to six questions are affected by your Crazy Eights cardplay: Q8, Q15, Q27, Q30, Q36, and U.S. 65 I.

In one state (any one of the five: Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, or Louisiana) you played the Ace of Hearts: in that state you should not have used that state's second-digit-is-8 Instruction. Each of the other four cards you played was an Eight: in each of those four states you should have used that state's second-digit-is-8 Instruction.

So there are 5 possible correct permutations for the five questions Q8, Q15, Q27, Q30, and Q36:
[a; a; a; a; a if you played the Ace of Hearts in Minnesota], [d; c; a; a; a if you played it in Iowa], [d; a; d; a; a if in Missouri], [d; a; a; b; a if in Arkansas], or [d; a; a; a; b if in Louisiana]. You have a perfect score for those five questions if your answer set is any of those 5 sets. For any other answer set, we'll score a 1-point penalty or each answer different from the nearest match among those 5 sets. E.g., [b; a; a; a; a] would score 1 wrong for the five questions, [b; b; a; a; a] would score 2 wrong, etc.

U.S. 65 I: If it happens that you played an Eight in Iowa, then during Leg 4's #1 you reëntered Minnesota and traveled upon the short section of U.S. 65 to interchange 8 and your U.S. 65 I answer should be 5; if instead you played the Ace of Hearts in Iowa, you avoided traveling upon Minnesota's U.S. 65 section and your U.S. 65 I answer should be 4.

Q Answer Leg 1
* Qausuittuq to Mine Centre, Ontario *

Q1

a) Mountain

After squeezing through Somerset Island's narrow neck, we cross the time zone boundary into the Mountain Time Zone, in which we cross the rope bridge to Boothia Peninsula.

Q2

b) no

Baffin Island's highland rivers, from Gifford to Hantzsch, drain southwestward toward Foxe Basin; in avoiding crossing these rivers, we must stay in the highlands above their headwaters, well away from being able to see (SEE def.: within 1/4 map inch) Prince Charles Island, until we cross the Arctic Circle past the eastern shore of Nettilling Lake.

Q3

d) 3

From Deception, we must round the headwaters of Povungnituk River (seeing [within 1/4 map inch] the town of Kangiqsujuaq), then we thread our way past the headwaters of Kogaluc River and Lac Minto (seeing Umiujaq), then we squeeze between the headwaters of Grande rivière de la Baleine and Lac Caniapiscau (seeing Brisay) before hiking past Lac Bienville to Radisson.

Q4

c) Larder Lake

#10 sends us not to p. 124 but to p. 123, where Rouyn- Noranda is at L-20 on the continuation section of the Ontario map. B.R. 3/c doesn't let us be aware of the existence of any town that's on p. 124; on p. 123 the first town that we go through is Larder Lake.

Q5

c) 2 or d) 3

Along highway 11 on p. 123 we see town Moonbeam (L-19) after Smooth Rock Falls, then B.R. 3/a takes us to the Thunder Bay city map, where we see Mall (M-11). Back on the province map we see Lac des Mille Lacs (L-15) -- which we misspelled as 'Milles Lacs': we will score answer c) 2 correct as well as d) 3.

Q Answer Leg 2
* Mine Centre, Ontario, to Danube, Minnesota *

Q6

c) 2

Arriving on p. 54 in #1, we're at Fort Frances, still in Canada, and we can't go east on any highway 11 there (B.R. 3/e: no 180° reversal of travel direction), so we continue westward on 11 in Canada until our road crosses the river to Baudette, where we can go east on Minn. 11, then immediately we see both the county named Lake of the Woods and the river named Rainy.

Q7

b) Margie

#3 does not end by placing us 'on' Minn. 65, so course-following rule b is not invoked for Minn. 65, so rule d keeps us going ahead west at Togo, then ahead onto wide principal highway at Effie, then rule c sends us north to stay upon principal highway at the next junction, then rule d is ahead with Minn. 6 at the next junction, then #4 is southwest on U.S. 71 at Big Falls, then soon we see Margie before #5 east on Minn. 1 at Northome.

MM A

a) Ball Club

#7's last action – Go 'south' – being the 'most recently-performed action' and not saying 'on Minnesota 73', ends #6's earlier placement of us 'on' Minn. 73, so rule b no longer is in effect once we've completed #7; now, without rule b, we use rule d to go onto orange multilane through Chisholm, then rule c keeps us upon orange multilane west through Keewatin and rules c & d take us through Ball Club (then rule c is south at Cass Lake to stay upon principal highway and rules c & d take us east upon Minn. 200 and U.S. 2 to Floodwood for #8).

Q8

This answer depends on your Crazy Eights cardplay. Your answer should be:

d) Sandstone

if in #9 you played an Eight [then after #10 you should go east on Minn. 18 in Aitkin County, then #11 is right on Minn. 23 at interchange 195, then immediately you see Sandstone].

or

a) Bock

if in #9 you played the Ace of Hearts [then after #10 you should ignore Minn. 18 and continue on Minn. 65 to #11 right on Minn. 23 in Kanabec Co., then first see Bock].

Q9

a) yes

B.R. 3/a automatically takes us to the St. Cloud map, where highways 23 and 75 (7 is 2 greater than 5) switch east/west positions, in the process sharing a north/south stretch of road.

Q10

d) no

#14 is south upon Minn. 22, then west upon U.S. 12 [to avoid Minn. 7 to Hutchinson], then south on Minn. 4 [to avoid U.S. 71 and Minn. 23 or leaving Kandiyohi Co.], then west upon Renville County 4, then north upon Renville County 6, then east upon U.S. 212 to Danube.

Q Answer Leg 3
* Danube, Minnesota, to Shell Rock in Iowa *

MM B

b) Maplewood Mall

#2 says 'onto' I-94, not 'on' I-94, so rule b is not in effect, and #3 uses the singular possessive word number's, not the plural possessive word numbers', so we can't use the interchange that has two numbers, 27 & 216, so rule d keeps us going south at that interchange onto I-494, then at Ft. Snelling Nat'l Cem. rule d sends us ahead onto Minn. 5, then rule c sends us north with U.S. 61 to #3 east at interchange 48 [sum 4 + 8 = 12], then we see Maplewood Mall first.

Q11

b) Lone Oak Rd.

I-694 ends at I-494, so rule d sends us ahead northwest at interchange 67, then #4 is southwest on I-35 E at interchange 101, then #5 is east at interchange 99AB [B.R. 3/d], then south at interchange 69, then we cross Lone Oak Rd. on the way to #6 on Minn. 3.

Q12

b) no

#8 ends at St. Peter left on Minn. 22, then rule b keeps us on 22 to #9 south on Minn. 22 also [rule a], then #10 is east at Beauford.

Q13

a) yes

#14 is south on U.S. 71 in Jackson Co., then #15 ends north on U.S. 169, then we see county seat and river each named Blue Earth, hence plural Blue Earths.

Q14

b) no

After #17, rule b keeps us on U.S. 52 southeast at Calmar on p. 39, then #18 is west near Ossian, then north on Ia. 150 at Festina, but 150 ends at Calmar, so rule c at Calmar sends us southwest to stay upon narrow red other through highway to Fort Atkinson for #19 west, then we stop and continue northbound at Spillville, then rule d is ahead onto Ia. 9 through Ridgeway to #20 at Cresco.

Q15

This answer depends on your Crazy Eights cardplay. Your answer should be:

a) fewer than 4

if in #19 you played an Eight [then after #22 you should go east on BR 18 near Clear Lake, then#23 is north onto U.S. 65 at Mason City, then stop at Shell Rock River in Worth County, having gone through 2 interchanges since #22].

or

c) 7 - 11

if in #19 you played the Ace of Hearts [then you should ignore BR 18 and continue on I-35 to#23 east onto Ia. 3 at interchange 165, then stop at Shell Rock River in Butler County, having gone through 10 interchanges since #22].

Q Answer Leg 4
* Shell Rock to Orient *

Q16

c) 2

Everyone, whether ending #1 south on I-35 at interchange 8 or north on Ia. 27 near Waverly (then stay on Ia. 27 to join I-35 northbound at interchange 190), reaches #2 east on Ia. 9 at interchange 203, then #3 is south onto U.S. 65 at Manly to see Music Man Square also before ending #3 (and Q16 [B.R. 2/a]) west after Mason City.

Q17

a) Barnum

#5 is 'at' Ia. 15, not 'on' it, so rule b is not in effect, so rule d is ahead onto gray other road through Whittemore, then #5 ends west toward West Bend, near which #6 is south 'onto' #15 (again not 'on' it), so at Ia. 3 rule d is straight ahead onto gray road to end #6 east at Manson, then we see Barnum first.

Q18

b) Nat'l Balloon Mus.

During #9, B.R. 3/a brings us to the Des Moines map through Johnston and ahead through interchange 131 (we can't turn there: 131 is palindromic) to rule c west at Hickman Rd., then rule d ahead west with U.S. 6 at 63rd St., then #9 ends south on I-35 at non-palindromic interchange 125, then back on the state map #10 is east on U.S. 69 at interchange 4, then we see Nat'l Balloon Mus. near Indianola first.

Q19

b) Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame

During #12, Ia. 4 ends at Panora, so rule d sends us ahead there and through Stuart to Ia. 92, which rule d puts us upon over to Greenfield to end #12, then immediately we see Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame nearby.

Q20

b) 4

After #13, we cross one river before #14 south onto dashed unpaved road at Macksburg, then we cross that same river before leaving Madison Co. to go east (crossing river but not in Madison Co.) to Lorimor, where we go north upon U.S. 169 back into Madison Co. to cross Middle River before swinging eastward around Winterset to go south to Winterset, where we go west to cross U.S. 169 onto Ia. 92, upon which we cross Middle River again before leaving Madison Co. toward Stanzel.

Q Answer Leg 5
* Orient, Iowa, to California, Missouri *

Q21

b) no

Rule d sends us ahead onto Ia. 2 where Ia. 25 ends, then at the next junction with rule a (the highest course-following rule) we end #1 by going right on Ia. 2.

Q22

b) Montgomery

#3 does not place us 'on' Ia. 83, so rule c keeps us upon principal highway at Atlantic to go southwesterly and through U.S. 6 shield, then end #3 on U.S. 59 at Oakland, then Montgomery is the first of the three that we see.

Q23

b) U.S. highway shield

#4 does not place us 'on' U.S. 71, so rules c & d take us clockwise around Maryville, then rule c keeps us upon principal highway acutely due north through Maryville, then rule d at the next junction gets us back onto U.S. 71 northbound through Braddyville to Ia. 2, where rule d keeps us going ahead through Clarinda and Hepburn to #5 south on U.S. 71, then immediately we see U.S. 71 shield behind us.

Q24

b) Kidder

#7 is at interchange 64 (Mo. 6 comes in from the west), then #8 is left at T, then southwest onto I-35 at interchange 68, then we see Kidder before #9.

Q25

b) 2

When we're eastbound on I-70, B.R. 3/a takes us to the Columbia map, where I-70 has no interchange with U.S. 63 (B.R. 3/d), so we keep going on I-70 back to the state map for #13 south on U.S. 54 at interchange 148, then B.R. 3/a takes us to the Jefferson City map to see 1 U.S. 54 shield, then, after #14's west, a U.S. 50 shield before B.R. 3/b takes us back to the state map to end #14 in Moniteau Co.

Q Answer Leg 6
* California, Missouri, to Bald Knob, Arkansas *

Q26

c) New Franklin

#2 is north 'at', not 'on', odd Mo. 5, so after Boonville rule c keeps us upon principal highway with U.S. 40 to #2 north on even Mo. 240, which rule b keeps us on to end #2 southwest on Mo. 5 at Fayette, then we go through New Franklin.

Q27

This answer depends on your Crazy Eights cardplay. Your answer should be:

a) Calhoun

if in Leg 5's #11 you played an Eight [then after Leg 6's #5 south 'at' Mo. 13 [not 'on' Mo. 13, so rule b is not in effect], rule d is ahead across Mo. 7 to Clinton, where you should go east on Mo. 18 (upon the road that comes east from Ballard), then #5 is north onto orange multilane, then northeast on Mo. 52, then you go through Lewis and Calhoun].

or

d) Tightwad

if in Leg 5's #11 you played the Ace of Hearts [then the course is as above except you should ignore Mo. 18 and continue ahead south through Clinton, then #5 is north where your road forms a T with the orange multilane, then east on Mo. 7 and you go through Coal and Tightwad].

Q28

d) 4

After #7, we see Fantastic Caverns just before B.R. 3/a takes us to the Springfield map to see Ozark Empire Fgrds., then back on the state map and upon U.S. 65 we see World's Smallest Cathedral near Highlandville, then B.R. 3/a takes us to the Branson map to see Yakov Smirnoff Theatre.

Q29

a) Albion or Overcup

B.R. 3/b keeps us upon the pp. 58-59 map until the physical edge of the map, which is well south of Huntsville, so we arrive on p. 10 after Witter (with no earlier knowledge of a junction of Ark. 74 with Ark. 23 [B.R. 3/c]); now on p. 10 we find Ark. 16 for #10 to send us east toward Dutton, then rule b keeps us on 16 over hill and dale through Nail, Ben Hur, Crabtree, Greers Ferry, and Albion to #11 after Searcy.

Q30

This answer depends on your Crazy Eights cardplay. Your answer should be:

a) yes

if in #12 you played an Eight [then after #13 you should go east on Ark. 287 in Faulkner Co., then 287 ends at Ark. 107 and rules c & d take you through Enola, Quitman, and Albion (again)].

or

b) no

if in #12 you played the Ace of Hearts [then you should ignore Ark. 287 and go ahead to #14 near Conway].

Q Answer Leg 7
* Bald Knob, Arkansas, to Zwolle, Louisiana *

Q31

b) Goodwin

From Bald Knob, rule b keeps us 'on' U.S. 64 through Augusta to #2 south on Ark. 17 through Grays, then east on U.S. 63 [product 6 x 3 = 18] [note U.S. 63 shields to the southwest in Prairie Co. and to the northeast in St. Francis Co.: U.S. 63 must connect, linking its shields (Numbered Highway def.) through Brinkley and/or interchange 216], then we see Goodwin.

Q32

b) Back Gate

Ark. 1 ends not near Barton nor near De Witt but near McGehee (K-10), so #4 is right on U.S. 165 [identified both north and south] near McGehee, then rule b keeps us on U.S. 165 through Back Gate (J-10).

MM C

c) Seven Devils Swamp

B.R. 3/a takes us to the Pine Bluff map to end #5 left on 3-digit U.S. 425; back on the state map, however, U.S. 425 is shown as ending at Ladd, where its type of road [principal highway] ends [Numbered Highway def.] and [B.R. 3/d] we can't use information from the Pine Bluff map to the contrary – since, so far as we know on the state map, we're not even physically upon U.S. 425 as we go east from Pine Bluff, so we can't very well 'continue on' 425, so rule d sends us ahead past Moscow down to #6 right on U.S. 278 near McGehee, then we see Seven Devils Swamp first.

Q33

b) 1

#7 is south on Ark. 7 [identified both north and south], then rule b keeps us on 7 to #8 northeast on U.S. 167 before El Dorado, then #9 is right on Ark. 8 [identified both northwest and southeast] near Fordyce, then on 8 we go through New Edinburg.

Q34

a) Pansy or b) Mist

#10 ends 'at', not 'on', U.S. 425, so rule c sends us east at Hamburg to stay upon our principal highway, then [if we consider that rule d cannot send us ahead at Lake Village onto gray other road] rule d would send us up U.S. 65 to the Pine Bluff map, where rules c and d send us south through interchange 43 to #11 west on U.S. 63 at Ark. 54 to see Pansy first, or, if we consider that rule d sends us ahead at Lake Village onto gray other road, we then bend back westbound through McMilan Corner to rule d onto U.S. 165 through Boydell, then #11 is west on U.S. 82 at Montrose, then we see Mist first.

Q35

b) Hunter

#17's left is not on U.S. 171 [not a state highway] but on La. 191, through Hunter.

Q Answer Leg 8
* Zwolle, Louisiana, to Tegucigalpa *

Q36

This answer depends on your Crazy Eights cardplay. Your answer should be:

a) Catahoula N.W.R.

if in Leg 7's #16 you played an Eight [then after Leg 8's #3 you should go east on La. 28 pastHicks and through Alexandria to #4 left on U.S. 84 after Walters, then immediately you see Catahoula N.W.R.].

or

b) Trout

if in Leg 7's #16 you played the Ace of Hearts [then after Leg 8's #3 you should ignore La. 28 as rule b keeps you on La. 8 to #4 left on U.S. 84 at Trout, which immediately you see].

Q37

a) 1

After #7 on the Monroe map (La. 15 is identified both northwest and southeast), back on the state map rule b keeps us on La. 15 [identified south of Deer Park (E-6)] onto gray other road at Ferriday to #8 northeast on La. 131, then we see Mississippi's county seat Natchez before #9 left on U.S. 84 at Vidalia.

Q38

b) no

#11 is right on I-110 on the Baton Rouge map; I-110 ends at I-10, so rule d keeps us going onto I-10, then onto I-12, then back on the state map #12 is left on I-55 near Hammond.

Q39

a) yes

#16 is south at interchange 226 [note: the mailed printed answer sheet incorrectly says 'interchange 228'], then left onto Bridge City Av., then rules c & d take us through Harvey, then off the city map upon La. 23 and through Happy Jack and Triumph to Venice.

U.S. 65 I

This answer depends on your Crazy Eights cardplay. Your answer should be:

5

if you played an Eight in Spillville, Iowa (answering 'fewer than 4' to Q15) [then Leg 3's #23 was onto northbound U.S. 65 at Mason City, taking you up onto Minnesota's short stretch of U.S. 65 between its state boundary and I-35's interchange 8].

or

4

if you played the Ace of Hearts in Spillville, Iowa (answering '7 - 11' to Q15) [then Leg 3's #23 was onto eastbound Ia. 3 and you never got to travel upon U.S. 65 in Minnesota].

Everybody traveled upon at least one section of U.S. 65 in the other 4 states. These are representative sections for each:

Iowa: Leg 4's #3 places us upon southbound U.S. 65 at Manly, Iowa.

Missouri: Leg 6's #8 places us upon southbound U.S. 65 near Ozark, Missouri.

Arkansas: During Leg 6's #8 we continue upon southbound U.S. 65 from Missouri into Arkansas.

Louisiana: Leg 7's #15 places us upon southbound U.S. 65 (which has #15's required two digits; we've passed up U.S. 165, which has three digits). [Note: using U.S. 165 is penalized here; no extra penalty in Leg 7.]

U.S. 65 II

[optional; not scored]

Arkansas; the actual U.S. 65 sign is on southbound U.S. 65 near Clinton.

MM D

b) Motul

Pilottown is about a quarter of the way from the 89°W tickmark at the bottom of the Louisiana map to the 90°W tickmark, therefore at approx. 89° 15' W longitude; maintaining constant longitude [meaning going due south], we arrive on the Mexico map also at 89° 15' W longitude, landing very near Telchac Puerto, from which we drive to #19 east at Motul, which immediately we see.

Q40

d) 4

From Chetumal to Puerto Cortés (the completion of #21: B.R. 2/a) we see Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
