We will not score Q29. It's been pointed out to us that Gerona reasonably could be seen or not; in particular, it isn't clear whether the 147 line ends at La Tour de Carol or at the border. We apologize for our lack of clarity. |

#3 isn't the first time we're at Argie Avenue (we haven't seen Views yet); we continue on Kirkstall Hill and see Eden Drive on our way to see Woodside View and Talbot View (hence plural Views), then #3 is west on Argie Avenue at The Village St. |
|
Q36 |
b) no |
For #4 we see Burley Wood La. and Burley Wood Mt., hence plural Woods, so then we turn on Eden Mount the first time we're at it. |

#15 ends right on Drive at the B.R. line, then we see Qns. Wood Rise and Low Wood Walk (Woodbridge Fold isn't at Woodbri Garth but 9 junctions later). |
| Question Number |
Answer |
Leg 7 * Fold to Ras al Khaimah * |
|
Q40 |
a) yes |
#1 ends left on Woodbridge Fold again, at whose end we go onto Woodbri Garth, then ahead onto Foxcroft Rd. and Foxcroft Mount to #2 left on Fox- croft Walk, then right on Foxcroft Mount clockwise back onto Foxcroft Rd. to left on Drive at Woodbri Garth, then we see Club. |
|
Q41 |
b) counterclockwise |
#4 ends left on Headingley Mt, then #5 is left on St. Anne's Road, then right on Beckett's Park Dr. clockwise, then south on St. Chad's Vw, then right on Beckett's Park Crescent counterclockwise, then north on St. Chad's Vw, then right on Beckett's Park Dr. clockwise back to St. Anne's Road for #6. |
|
Q42 |
b ) no |
#6 ends at Glebelands Dr. right onto Grove, so after Wood -bine Ter. #7 is right on Grove Road. |
|
Q43 |
c) southwesterly |
#12 at the roundabout before Khatt Hot Springs gives us a full circuit to send us back the way we came from, then #13 is southwesterly at the junctions that's 7.7 KM from the junction where soon we do #14. |
|
Q44 |
a) 1 |
#14 sends us across bridge to the roundabout 2.9 KM later, where we're not told which way to go, so we do a quarter-circle and exit north to Coffee Pot R/A, where in #15 the Dervish is waving, so we do a full circuit and exit south to reach the roundabout we had just left, where again we do a quarter-circle, this time exiting west to #16 left through 1 crossroad toward Mangroves and #17's roundabout. |
|
Q45 |
a) yes |
After the full circuit at #17's roundabout near Rak Museum, we see printed name Dhow Yards on the way to #18. |
|
Q46 |
a) yes |
#18 is east at the crossroad just north of Mangroves, then #19 is north, then again we reach the roundabout south of Coffee Pot R/A and do a quarter-circle, this time exiting east and seeing bridge. |
| Question Number |
Answer |
Leg 8 * Ras al Khaimah to Pier at Fremantle * |
|
Q47 |
a) yes; to the left |
We go ahead at #14's junction, then at the next junction (which we haven't seen before) #20 is southwest toward Kharran, then we reach roundabout near Beach Hotel where we're not told which way to go, so we do a quarter-circle and exit north to Tent R/A, where also we do a quarter-circle, exiting east and up to Rak Hotel for #21. So we reverse direction in Leg 8's #1 back southwesterly from Rak Hotel to Tent R/A, where we do a quarter-circle and exit north, then at the next roundabout do three-quarters of a circle and exit west, then see Rak Museum to our left just before reaching roundabout for a quarter-circle before exiting south, then reach roundabout north of Tent R/A for three-quarters of a circle and exit east back to Rak Hotel. |
|
Q48 |
a) yes; to the left |
#3 isn't another reversal: we leave Rak Hotel by going southwesterly the same as in #1, then at Tent R/A we exit north in #4, then at the next roundabout we exit west in #5, then again we see Rak Museum to our left before #6's roundabout. |
|
Q49 |
b) no |
After #6's south, we reach roundabout north of Tent R/A and are not told which way to go, so we do a half-circle and exit continuing south, then in #7 exit Tent R/A east, then past Mangroves we exit roundabout east for #8, then we keep going across bridge to the junction of Leg 7's #14, where now #9 is a left, then at the next junction B.R. 1/c sends us up to the roundabout near Khatt Hot Springs where again the Dervish is waving, so we make one circuit and go back the way we came from, this time using B.R. 1/c to go straight at Leg 7 #13's junction, so #10 is right at the Khatt turnoff junction. |
|
Q50 |
b) 1 |
#12 is north on Carrington, then #13 is east on Tamar (not on Forrest, whose 5th letter is e; the letter O before Forrest's name belongs to the north/south Robinson St.; if it belongs to Robinson, it can't belong to Forrest), then #14 is north on Adrian, then we cross Hammad St. |
|
Q51 |
b) no |
#16 is right on Redwood, then right on Woodley Cr. after having crossed Marmion St. (earlier crossed after #12 on Carrington), then #17 is right on Hornsby St, then left at Coleman Cr. |
|
Q52 |
a) yes |
#19 ends sending us down Yeovil, then B.R. 1/c loops us across and back up onto Westbury and we see View Terrace, identified to the west. |
|
Q53 |
a) yes |
Westbury takes us to #20 south at Preston Point Road toward the Birdwood Circuses, onto which we turn left and begin clockwise circuits, counting 2 opportunities on Fraser St. for each circuit, the 1st and all other odd-numbered ones being from Birdwood Circus East, so after #53's turn on Fraser St. we cross Birdwood Circus West. |
| Question Number |
Answer |
Leg 9 * Pier at Fremantle to Eureka * |
|
Q54 |
a) yes |
#1 ends by putting us on Riverside, which runs into Beach St, which crosses under Queen Victoria St. so we can't turn on Queen Victoria, then #2 is left on Beach St., which goes southwest just after the undercrossing, then we go through Beach St.'s printed word St. on the way to #3 left on Edward St. |
|
Q55 |
a) yes |
#4 is right on Adelaide St., then soon after #4's left on High St. we see Queen St., then #5 is north on Swanbourne St., then right on Marmion St., which three times we crossed earlier, then we see King St. before completing #5 on Montreal St. |
|
Q56 |
a) yes |
Stack is not the same as Stock, but along Stevens we cross Solomon St., whose name is the same as that of a St. we crossed after Leg 8's #14 on Adrian St. |
|
Q57 |
a) Darling |
#8 is left on Wray Av., then left on Solomon St., then right on Samson St., along which we see Darling St. |
|
Q58 |
a) Absolon |
#10 ends southwest on Forsyth St. before Stock Rd., so later, after #11 ends north on Stock from Peel, our first opportunity for #12 is Stockdale Rd. and our second is not Forsyth (which does not form a junction with Stock) but Leach, then we see Absolon St. |
| |
(The next 4 questions will be scored directly from your drawings on Map 7 and [optionally for MM I ] on Map 8.) |
|
|
Q59 |
|
The perimeter is 7,400 meters around, so we have to add 2,600 to that to make 10,000, and 2,600 is exactly twice the east/west width of the layout, so we can add 2,600 by adding 4 segments of 650 meters each (the distance between north/south trails). There is only one to do that without having the course go through any trail junction more than once. |
|
Q60 |
|
To make more changes of direction to the right (8) than to the left (5), we must start to the north and arrive heading west. |
|
Q61 |
|
The 5,000-meter point is in the middle of the north edge of the layout, after 400 + 650 + 400 + 650 + 400 + 650 + 1,200 + 650 = 5,000 meters (any symbol you use is okay). |
|
MM I |
|
All stones slide straight down the ice sheet and arrive head-on, so Mukmuk's first white stone displaces Sumi's black stone in the 12-foot ring, which in turn displaces Sumi's other black stone, in the 4-foot ring, knocking it out of play.
Then Sumi has a choice: either he could hit Mukmuk's white stone that's now in the 12-foot circle, which likewise then would displace Sumi's only other black stone, now in the 4-foot circle, knocking it out of play (not a wise choice, because Mukmuk then could throw his last stone out of play and win with 2 points, but Mukmuk doesn't do that: he throws straight anyway);
or (a wiser choice) he could displace Mukmuk's white stone in the 8-foot circle, knocking it out of play.
Then Mukmuk's final white stone (in the first case) hits Sumi's black stone in the 12-foot circle, displacing it and knocking it into (and in turn displacing) his own white stone in the 4-foot circle, knocking it out of play, or (in the second case) displaces Sumi's black stone in the 8-foot circle, knocking it out of play.
The final positions are the same in either case. |
|
MM II |
b) Sumi |
Sumi has a black stone (in the 4-foot ring) closer to the center than are any of Mukmuk's white stones, so Sumi wins. |
|
MM III |
b) 1 |
Sumi gets 1 point for the black stone in the 4-foot ring, and no more points (Mukmuk's white stone in the 8-foot ring is second-closest to the center). |

Answer |
Leg 10 * Eureka to Malta * |
|
Q62 |
b) 1 |
Through Grants Pass, Eugene, and Portland would be 3, to which we could add 1 by adding Redding, Klamath Falls, or Bend (or 2 or 3 of those minus 1 or 2 of Grants Pass and Eugene). [Newport would lead either to 3 or to 5 or more; Biggs would lead to 5 or more.] |
|
Q63 |
b) no |
#2 is through Ellensburg and either Pendleton or Spokane (not both, and not Biggs, which would make 3 or more). |
|
Q64 |
a) yes |
We can avoid both Burns and Butte. If #2 was through Pendleton, then #3 (without reversing direction) would be to Spokane and then to Pendleton and then to Missoula; if #2 was through Spokane, then #3 would be to Pendleton and then to Spokane and then to Missoula. |
|
Q65 |
B |
Three possibilities of 6 cities all lead to B. 1: Wells, Twin Falls, Salt Lake City, Rawlins, Idaho Falls, Butte; 2: same, except end at Boise; 3: Wells, Twin Falls, Missoula, Helena, Great Falls, Billings. [To Coos Bay would be only 5 cities.] |
|
Q66 |
b) 1 |
If from Butte, #6 would be through either Helena or Missoula (not both); if from Boise, #6 would be through Missoula; if from Billings (reversing direction not allowed by B.R. 1/e), #6 would be through Livingston and Helena. |
