We posted them here at noon Pacific Time (3 p.m. Eastern) on October 28.

In addition, earlier in the week we mailed answer books to all competitors; they should arrive soon.

The answer books include a number of reproduced map sections with the official course drawn upon them.

The answer books also include the procedure for filing a protest (objection) regarding any answer.
We'll keep this page posted at least until the protest email deadline, November 5.

So we reverse direction in Leg 8's #1 back southwesterly from Rak Hotel to Tent R/A, where we do a quarter-circle and exit north, then at the next roundabout do three-quarters of a circle and exit west, then see Rak Museum to our left just before reaching roundabout for a quarter-circle before exiting south, then reach roundabout north of Tent R/A for three-quarters of a circle and exit east back to Rak Hotel.

#3 isn't another reversal: we leave Rak Hotel by going southwesterly the same as in #1, then at Tent R/A we exit north in #4, then at the next roundabout we exit west in #5, then again we see Rak Museum to our left before #6's roundabout.

The perimeter is 7,400 meters around, so we have to add 2,600 to that to make 10,000, and 2,600 is exactly twice the east/west width of the layout, so we can add 2,600 by adding 4 segments of 650 meters each (the distance between north/south trails). There is only one to do that without having the course go through any trail junction more than once.

To make more changes of direction to the right (8) than to the left (5), we must start to the north and arrive heading west.

The 5,000-meter point is in the middle of the north edge of the layout, after 400 + 650 + 400 + 650 + 400 + 650 + 1,200 + 650 = 5,000 meters (any symbol you use is okay).

MM I

All stones slide straight down the ice sheet and arrive head-on, so Mukmuk's first white stone displaces Sumi's black stone in the 12-foot ring, which in turn displaces Sumi's other black stone, in the 4-foot ring, knocking it out of play.

Then Sumi has a choice: either he could hit Mukmuk's white stone that's now in the 12-foot circle, which likewise then would displace Sumi's only other black stone, now in the 4-foot circle, knocking it out of play (not a wise choice, because Mukmuk then could throw his last stone out of play and win with 2 points, but Mukmuk doesn't do that: he throws straight anyway);

or (a wiser choice) he could displace Mukmuk's white stone in the 8-foot circle, knocking it out of play.

Then Mukmuk's final white stone (in the first case) hits Sumi's black stone in the 12-foot circle, displacing it and knocking it into (and in turn displacing) his own white stone in the 4-foot circle, knocking it out of play, or (in the second case) displaces Sumi's black stone in the 8-foot circle, knocking it out of play.

The final positions are the same in either case.

MM II

Sumi has a black stone (in the 4-foot ring) closer to the center than are any of Mukmuk's white stones, so Sumi wins.

Then Sumi has a choice: either he could hit Mukmuk's white stone that's now in the 12-foot circle, which likewise then would displace Sumi's only other black stone, now in the 4-foot circle, knocking it out of play (not a wise choice, because Mukmuk then could throw his last stone out of play and win with 2 points, but Mukmuk doesn't do that: he throws straight anyway); or (a wiser choice) he could displace Mukmuk's white stone in the 8-foot circle, knocking it out of play. Then Mukmuk's final white stone (in the first case) hits Sumi's black stone in the 12-foot circle, displacing it and knocking it into (and in turn displacing) his own white stone in the 4-foot circle, knocking it out of play, or (in the second case) displaces Sumi's black stone in the 8-foot circle, knocking it out of play. The final positions are the same in either case.
