"Sampling fuckups and low-fi noise rock treatments/re-recordings, if not
beautifully layered experimental noise. If you liked Ariel's Haunted Pink Graffiti you'll dig tracks on this for sure. If
you're into noise rock stalwarts F/i, even psyche rock a la Bevis Frond, then pay attention: any time an artist sacrifices
"quality" recording for simple boom box or Radio Shack hi-ball mics chances are they have something extra going on, at least
at a passionate level, more than your average slick ass "cool" indie rock/pop or shoegazing poseur somnambulatory act. This
is good stuff that will grate next to slickly recorded acts but channels instead their roots, Barrett era Floyd, Swell Maps'
noisiest, all the way up to original Neutral Milk Hotel. Theres even some genuine quality noise layering in here. Great cd!"

from Vital Weekly, # 368, Week 13: OG X (2LP by Old Gold)
From the label Old Gold a couple of releases were reviewed in the past,
although I am pretty sure it was not everything that they released. But the
releases that we encountered held a good balance between improvised music, free jazz, lo-fi singer songwriters and experiments
- everything outside the mainstream, even if the mainstream is underground. The label now exists ten years (actually the
celebration was already in 2004) and under the funny name 'OG X', they released a limited double LP spanning their artists
and their unreleased works. So not a best of ten years, but a best of the rest. Many of the artists I never heard of, such
as Die Spatzen, Tom Heasley & Ken Rosser, Buford Highway, Bon Vivants, Drue Langlois, How To Kick Yourself. The more
familiar names include Jad Fair & R. Stevie Moore, Charlie Parker (which is a band, not the man), Yximalloo and Eugene
Chadbourne. Although the outcome of this found box of lost classics is a diverse one, it's also one that bears the tag 'outsider'
all over it. When it comes to the free-jazz punk of Charlie Parker or Zandosis or the lo-fi qualities of say Cheryl Leonard
or the the really found sound of Craig, everything is beyond anything regular. And that makes this already into a classic
of outsider music. (Frans de Waard) (www.staalplaat.com/vital/)
Golden oldies
BY CHAD RADFORD
Creative Loafing, Dec. 26, 2004
Over the last decade, Old Gold Records has rounded up and released experimental, adventurous and otherwise not-so-accessible
recordings from an unruly stable of musicians residing in Atlanta and beyond. Artists as varied as Sebadoh co-founder Eric
Gaffney to the "disabled but able to rock" local crime-fighter known only as Danger Woman have worked closely with
the label. In honor of its 10th anniversary, Old Gold owners Marshall Avett and Ben Young have reached deep into the vault
to churn up a 2-by-12-inch compilation spanning 10 years of the label's best unreleased material. The release, bound by a
handmade sleeve, is a lavishly homespun document that coughs up a hodgepodge of noise, indie rock and field recordings. The
artists included are far ranging: Eugene Chadbourne, Jad Fair, locals Zandosis and Justin Hughes (Ladies Night/former Rock*A*Teens
guitarist) performing under the name Buford Highway. The pace of the record brings each act together in a collection of raucous
and totally nonlinear musical expeditions. "It's a mishmash of music," Young says. "We didn't make any rules,
we just tried to pick the best stuff we had and put it all together into one cohesive package."
In the case of this recording, "cohesive" is a subjective term that doesn't do justice to the artfully erratic nature
of the music. "Well, it's semi-cohesive," Avett adds. "It's all over the place and a little high-end for us,
but what the heck, you only turn 10 once."
The noisy and rugged little nuggets are not going to polish up like unearthed gems. Rather, enjoy them for the dusty, ugly,
and unique items they are. That is the spirit to best appreciate the Danger Woman dance party ("1, 2, 3-4-5") that
leads off disc two of this double-CD set. There are some notable note makers here, such as Eugene Chadbourne, Jad Fair, and
R. Stevie Moore. The wonderful thing about this release is you will feel the same about the less recognizable names here,
such as Bad Poet and L. Contra. (4 out of 5) -Tom Tearaway Schulte, Outsight (www.new-sounds.net)
