Base Security
A complex Security Police network was maintained at Tan Son Nhut Air base. The formidable defense was never more evident than during the '68 TET offensive. Penetration of the perimeter by the enemy was stymied until reinforcements arrived from combat aircraft, artillery and Army and ARVN forces.
In addition to constant security patrols on foot, by vehicle and by dog-accompanied sentries, 377th Security Police also furnished base support in numerous ways, including pass and identification, traffic controls, and both criminal and accident investigation.
Many Security Policemen found themselves, on occasion, performing in a role usually reserved to that of a defensive rifleman, operating armored personnel carriers/V-100's, delta sweeps, etc. Proficiency training with the 1st Cavalry and 101st Airborne contributed to a level of preparedness the enemy dare not challenge again.
I had the privilege of serving in various defensive roles i.e., perimeter defense (bunker & apc patrol), heavy weapons and as an in-country combat tactics instructor at the firing range school. On the accompanying pages you'll be able to see glimpses of the different areas.
My tour of duty was relatively quiet when compared to those who came before me. We learned to prepare even better than ever before. Technological advances such as the starlight scope and RCA ground motion radar made our jobs easier. |
