Making Small Rooms Look Larger
Sponsored by: NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®

The more usable space you have in your home and the more spacious it feels, the more appealing it will be to potential buyers.  Following are several tips used by designers to declutter rooms and provide an illusion of more space.

Maximize Your Living Space

    * Eliminate clutter, including stacks of books, papers, toys and other accumulated items.  Keep counters, tabletops and other surfaces clear.
    * Limit the number of small accessories, e.g., occasional tables, vases, framed photos, etc., to avoid a feeling of disorder.
    * Don't place too many pieces of furniture in a small space. A love seat may work better than a sofa depending on the room’s size and shape.  You can also use two medium-sized upholstered or wood chairs; place them near the wall and then pull into the room when you need additional seating.
    * The proportion of a room in relation to its contents is also important.  A large, brightly colored element can overwhelm a smaller room and make it feel even smaller.
A glass table, whether it is a dining, coffee or end table, will create a more spacious appearance.
    * Select wall décor carefully.  One large painting works better than a grouping of smaller prints.

Use Light and Color to Open Up a Room

    * A lighter color scheme, incorporating pastel, neutral or white tones, provides the illusion of a larger room; bright or dark hues have the opposite effect.
    * Within each room, use a monochromatic color scheme on the furniture, rugs and walls.  Select different shades and textures of the color you’ve chosen.
    * Generally speaking, the brighter the room, the more spacious it feels.  Skylights and solar tubes are natural alternatives for adding light to a room.  Recessed spot lighting is visually appealing and is perfect for a small space.
    * The floor and the ceiling are the fifth and sixth walls of every room.  Light-colored flooring or carpeting will make the room appear brighter and more open.  The same applies to the ceiling—a lighter color will "open up" the space above.
    * Mirrors also lend a more spacious feel.  They reflect not only images, but light and color, too.  Be a little daring and cover an entire wall with mirror tiles. Your room will seem to double in size.

Avoid Urine Trouble
September 12,  2006

by Cat Age Companion

Litter box a little too dry? Your kitty's urinary tract may be blocked.

Mucus, mineral crystals, and other elements can clump together to form a plug that prevents urination.  More common in male cats, such blockages are painful and can be dangerous if left untreated.  Take your kitty to the vet immediately if you suspect he's having difficulty urinating.  Always make sure he has access to plenty of fresh water. Also, consider adding canned food to his diet, which will boost fluid levels and may help prevent blockage.
