GAILS DOG TRAINING MADE EASY

Self Rewards

When you think about rewarding your dog, you think about a treat, a walk, his meals, scratch behind the ears, a tummy rub, all the things he loves to recieve from you.

What you may not think about is self rewards that come in many ways.

1. The way his actions gets you to do what he wants. You might let him outside when he barks, let him out of his crate when he whines, smart dog right, and a smarter dog will carry these actions to extremes and find new way to use these actions, becuase he has figured out what behaviors work for him so he will repeat them often as long as they are self rewarding

2. Self rewards also come by getting in the trash finding a yummy morsel, It only takes once for the behavior to be rewarded and worth repeating, and if it works with one garbage can thier must be others worth investigating.

3. Maybe you have a dog who loves to play with things that are important to you like your shoes, or the roll of toilet papper, why they must be very special for you to chase fido down, so who is in charge of this game?  He learnes getting your attention is certainly self rewarding and he will try harder and run faster next time. The behavior works and he will become a master at repeating and each time offering more, he may even try another item to see if it has a higher chase instinct from you.

Potty Training

Dogs will not elimate where they sleep (unless they were raised in it and had no other options).  Using a dog crate while you are away will keep your pup safe and calm waiting for your arrival home. You may have to go home for lunch if you work all day to play with  and exersize your pup until he/she is old enough to hold it all day. A doggy door is great, but will not train your dog where he/she should potty. you need to take your pup to the place you want him/her to elimante, excersize your pup and when he/she does the good deed reward with lots of priase even a treat.  Use the same cue words as your pup is doing the good deed, (go potty! :-) ) it won't take long to teach your pup to go on command. When you are at home take your pup out to the potty place every 30 minutes, if the deed is done pup gets praise and reward and gets some free time in the house, if the deed is not done pup stays on a leash near you, or in a crate until your next outing, pup will learn real quick that when your outside in the potty area what you are there for and get the deed done quicker. before you know it the dog will be going to the door when he needs to go out so be consistant with using the same door and place.

Make sure you are feeding your dog at least 2 hours before you plan on leaving , excersize  puppy well before you leave and again on your return.

If pup makes a potty mistake in the house, it is not the pups fault, it is yours! do not punish the dog, your punishment is you have to clean it up!
