49ers may pay price for lewd party

San Francisco Examiner

SAN FRANCISCO -- At a time the San Francisco 49ers are lagging in the polls in their efforts for a new stadium, a raunchy 50th birthday party for the team's political consultant couldn't have come at a worse time.

Among the shockers seen Saturday by guests at the San Francisco Mart at Jack Davis' "Bacchanalia" bash: male and female strippers, some simulating fellatio; a 300-plus-pound sadomasochist performing oral sex on his partner; and a leather-clad dominatrix, who carved a satanic star into a man's back and urinated on him.

Notables at the event included San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown (who left early); 49ers President Carmen Policy and his wife; the Giants' Executive Vice President Larry Baer; City Attorney Louise Renne; and Assemblywoman Carole Migden.

Davis, who has managed the successful campaigns for the past two mayors and the Giants ballpark, insisted no harm had been done at the event thrown by his friends.

"It's kind of sad that a town that had a worldwide reputation as being the Barbary Coast, a fun town that made its name on the map, would find that people throwing a party for a friend becomes offensive because of artistic acts that go beyond their limits," Davis said Monday. "Things occurred that were beyond what I understood or would want to understand. But nobody barred the doors ... and I didn't see anyone running for the elevators."

While Davis has been known for his wild birthday bashes and parties involving lewd acts, this time the 49ers -- who have paid him more than $100,000 to orchestrate the crucial stadium campaign -- might pay the price, marketing and political experts say.

"You can probably get away with a lot more in San Francisco -- but even in San Francisco, for God's sake, there are limits," said Dudley Buffa, and director of the Lafayette-based Institute for a New California, a political think tank.

As part of the June 3 ballot measure, the 49ers propose a $325 million horseshoe-shaped stadium to seat 75,000; the city would be committed to pay $100 million toward construction costs. DeBartolo and his partners also propose a $200 million entertainment and retail mall next to the stadium.
